A 12-year-old boy is receiving international acclaim for a video he posted about the link between vaccines and autism.

Marco Arturo, a science fan from Mexico, posts videos on his Facebook page to his thousands of followers.

His autism video had racked up 4.7m views at the time of writing. Marco claims from the beginning that doctors have been “lying to us” about vaccines, and has decided to do his own research into the subject.

There is no all or nothing. There are many forms of ASC and ADD and there have been a few cases where they were obviously caused by something, in some cases a vaccine. That doesn’t mean governments and contractors should regard whistle blowers in these cases as enemies. Neither is it easy to exempt your family from programmes regarded as compulsory. The age at which a huge variety of symptoms “manifests” (and in the opinion of many, they never have done) varies colossally. It’s impossible to protect your child from a colossal raft of dangers and calamities, deliberate or accidental. Nothing even needs debunking, any more than it needs exaggerating.

I’ve wondered for awhile now why there are so many kids with autism. Seems to be more than when I was young.

VACCINES DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM!!!

I am serious, this has been proven wrong over and over again by pretty much the entire scientific community. The persistence of this rumor is not only insulting (turns a serious disability into a political football), but it also results in the abandonment of a medical miracle and the reemergence of diseases previously close to extinction. Why do you think whooping cough is coming back?

Take it from somebody who has a form of autism, and who had it long before he was ever vaccinated. Likewise my two siblings were vaccinated and to this day do not have autism.

It’s not that more people have autism, it’s that we are better at detecting it and actually care to do so. Currently when a child seems to have trouble fitting in or learning, we do tests on the child to detect if it has a learning disability. Until recent times, it was far more common to ignore these children or to try and beat it out of them (society has a bad track record of taking care of people whose minds are afflicted).

In the 1970s and 1980s, about 1 in 2000 children were deemed to have autism. The current rate is judged to be around 1 in 150 8-year olds in the USA. It is a fact that a wider set of symptoms today is recognised as an autism spectrum disorder and so should account for some increase in the statistic. Over shorter time periods (eg. 1992 - 1998) specific studies conclude that the rate of autism is stable, but there is not a single view on that for longer (40-50 year) periods.

As to causes - only 10% of cases are attributed to a cause, and 90% are of unknown cause. Genetic influences are known to exist - eg. for identical twins, if one has autism, there is a 75% likelihood that the other will. For fraternal twins, that figure falls to 3%. For non-twin siblings, there is an 8% chance of autism for each sibling of an autistic child.

Various environment factors are also indicated, in particular pesticides (with some evidence to support this) and PCBs.

Medical authorities are of the view there is no evidence to support the view that vaccines are causative. [In the past, vaccines contained a mercury-containing preservative, which was suspected of being a factor. But there is no evidence of this.]

It would be nice to avoid taking vaccines. But the evidence suggests that it is only practical to avoid vaccinating a child when all those around her ARE vaccinated.

Why would it be nice to avoid? I mean, it’s a shot, and there’s the rare dangerous reaction, but overall vaccination has been one of the great positive discoveries of humanity. I suppose it would be nice if there were no infectious diseases to have to protect against (and we have eradicated a few of them with mass vaccination programs) … but, y’know, fallen world.

I don’t support compulsion in much, especially medical decisions, but it does seem awfully selfish to believe that a thing is unacceptably risky, but rely on every other kid doing it so yours doesn’t have to. (And, of course, if enough people do that, we have the actual tragedy of kids dying from diseases we thought we had licked.)

Simply - it would be nice not to have to take any drug.

That’s my point.

I kind of wish people wouldn’t post stuff like this because it always ends up being a flame war. we know vaccines don’t cause autism there’s no question of that by this point but some people think they know more than scientists that have been studying it for years and yes some scientists are very unscientific that’s not the point as someone on the autism spectrum I am so sick and tired of these insults and guess what? I didn’t become any more autistic after I got vaccinations

Stating “vaccines do not cause autism” is a claim.

So is “there seems to be at times a link between some vaccines and autism”

Claims that can be discussed by people, society and scientists on both sides.

But neither side should say “this is concluded” for it is not at this time “concluded”.

Rather discussion and studies can continue- seeking the truth of the question.

Those on both sides on the question - should continue to look into the matter with an open mind.

All such discussions ought of course to be undertaken with civility and Christian love - as befits Christians. Those on both sides should ‘seek truth’ and be open to truth always.
