Autumn 2012 Embertide Days

A poster in another forum just reminded me that today kicks off this season’s Ember days. If you’re as busy as I am you may have forgotten, too so here’s a friendly reminder to anyone who commemorates these days with their family.

Does anyone have any parish or family traditions for Embertide? Since before we got married, my wife (then girlfriend/fiancee) would make special dinners and we’d read a little penitential reflection for the season.
 
No traditions since I’m new to Catholicism.

I do know that our TLM today will follow the “Ember Wednesday in September” propers.
 
Thank you for reminding me. I was fasting already as it is Wednesday, but now I have more prayers to pray (from my 1962 Missal, as there are no Extraordinary Form Masses in my area during the week)!
 
Didn’t forget. Even got some prayers said while I was picking 10 ponds of Sungold tomatoes and 16 pounds of green beans. Got my Rosaries completed and the Little Office done (except Compline, which will be done at bedtime). No TLM handy 😦 . Guess we can’t have it all.

Going about 45 miles south on Friday. The parish down there is starting a Novena for St. Michael so want to be part of that. Locally, things are not very upbeat.

Know any prayers that are particularly suitable for Ember Days? I guess I’ll check my 1960 Breviary and see what’s in there.

Truelight, like so many other things that happened after Vatican II (not necessarily because of it) it was swepted out with lots of things like veiling, latin and many of the beautiful old prayers.

I haven’t learned all the traditional things that are seeing a revived interest, but this is a neat coincidence - I have three or so older missals from the 50s or 60s I’ve gotten at sales. And I was just looking at one of them the other day and seeing Ember Days mentioned - I just thought it was a different name for Ordinary Time.

I didn’t go to Catholic school or I might’ve known more. I was born in 1962 (when Vatican II opened!) and I do still remember vaguely as a kid the earlier English Mass translations. That’s why I have this little collection of missals! I’ve also been to EF Mass a few times - and hope to go again.

They were an official part of the old Liturgical Calendar, and were removed along with Rogation Days, the Seasons of Epiphany, Septuagesima, and Pentacost, and all the rest.
 
Remember, also, if you’d like to observe Ember Days more fully, they are traditionally days of abstinence from meat (as in, all three days, not just the Friday).
 
I went to low mass today and Father told us before it started that there were 6 readings! My knees were sore by the Gospel from all the kneeling LOL 😃 I did not participate in abstinence and fasting (beyond the Friday fast) but next embertide, I will hopefully be prepared. Like TL said, I never heard of it until this thread.

They are days of fasting as well. Fasting and abstinence on Ember Days was obligatory prior to the reforms.
 
Well, I must “fess-up”. I did Wednesday real well and Friday too but I lust blew it out the door today. Got busy working in the garden, putting in lights in the greenhouse, and spraying for thistle and blackberry in the pastures and I ate chicken for dinner. I hate it when my brain dies in the middle of doing things correctly.
