A SYDNEY (Australia) doctor charged with the manslaughter of a foetus performed a late-term abortion after the mother said she could not raise the child, a court was told today.
Suman Sood, owner of the Fairfield Women’s Health Clinic, is the first doctor in New South Wales to be charged with the manslaughter of a foetus in more than 34 years.
She is also charged with administering a drug with intent to procure a miscarriage.
Dr Sood appeared in Liverpool Local Court today on the second day of a committal hearing into allegations that she carried out an abortion on a woman who was five-and-a-half months pregnant.
Crown Prosecutor Paul Leask has told the court that after being treated with oral and vaginal tablets at Dr Sood’s clinic in May 2002, the woman had gone home and later that evening went into labour.
She had rung Dr Sood, who told her to take a Panadol or Nurofen tablet.
The following day, about 3.30am, she gave birth on the toilet.
She called ambulance officers, who took her and the baby to hospital, where doctors realised the 520gm baby boy was alive.
He died about 8am.
The mother, whose name has been suppressed, was 20 years old when she gave birth to the baby in May 2002.
Dr Sood’s barrister, Phillip Boulten SC, today cross-examined the young mother, asking why she had not considered options other than abortion.
The woman said she had not taken up an offer from her parents to raise the baby because they were going overseas to retire and had “already had their children”.
She said she had not wanted her child to live overseas.
The young mother said she was also concerned about her lack of money.
She had only been employed for a short time before her pregnancy and unemployed without benefits for months previously.
“I thought about it (having the baby) and knew I wouldn’t be able to raise a child,” she said.
“I was sad about that and then angry, I knew what I had to do.”
She went to Dr Sood’s clinic with her cousin and the cousin’s nephew to book an appointment for an abortion.
She said she was told the abortion would cost $1500.
A doctor specialising in abortion is due to give evidence later this afternoon.
The hearing before Magistrate Anthony Marsden continues.
