Howdy all,

Why give our son nasty canned and bottled food with too much salt, I want him to have what is best. I am new at this cooking for kids thing so, any advise on a good book?

I am looking for something that will not only tell me what to cook, but how I am supposed to strain food, what stuff I will need to get, and what not to feed him. I ask because I see so many books suggesting things that I know are not good. i.e. fresh strawberry surprize with whole milk, for a 9 month old. No milk or strawberries will go toward my son until he is atleast a year old.

I am thinking about this book:
The Basic Baby Food Cookbook: Complete beginner guide to making baby food at home

Thanks for your help.

I have no advice on a good book for you. :o My dear mother-in-law gave me 2 or 3 such books, and I never used them.

My husband cooks ( :extrahappy: ), and when we feed the babies solid food, we just mash the food that’s already on our plates with a fork, and give baby food from our fingertips (or encourage them to pick it up themselves). I’ve also been known to slightly pre-chew meats and tougher foods. We delay solids until 1 year of age, though.

One thing I do sometimes is just take a banana and mash it with some breastmilk, or an avocado, etc and do the same. I like using single ingredients mashed with breastmilk when they are first learning to eat. Basically I just prepare it as we go, so it may not be that helpful if you are looking to prepare in batches. I do use baby food in jars as long as it doesn’t have certain things (eg no sugar added etc).

Forgot to say;

We are sort of delaying solids as well, he is 6m and his main food is from ma-ma. We are letting him experiment with solids, but everything will be at his pace and nothing will be forced.

👍

This is great! My little guy is 7 months old, and he insists on grabbing graham crackers out of our hands and taking a few bites. 😃 I don’t really consider this “starting solids” though. My daughter was 15 months old before she ate solid food on a regular basis (more than once or twice a week). Going slowly and letting them set the pace is so easy.

I suggest Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. She has some ideas that are a little out there, but most of the book is very informative and useful, including information about how to prepare any and every fresh vegetable or fruit.

Also, Whole Foods for Babies and Toddlers by Margaret Kenda is helpful and has some good ideas for feeding mom and dad too.

Same as Truly, we just took what we were eathing, mashed it with a fork as needed and let DS eat what we were eating.

I have the most non-picky eater on earth, he will try anything, was requesting sushi when he was in grade school.

SUPER BABY FOOD!!!

I LOVE that book. None of my three children (soon to be four) have ever had a single mouthful of commercial baby food, since I’ve only ever used that program. AND with baby no. one, I was working full time, so it’s totally something that isn’t so time consuming you have to be uber-organized martha Stewart to make work.

None of my children have ever had a major illness, and I attribute part of that to the nutrition they got from the diet. In fact, I can count on two hands and still have fingers left over the number of times we’ve ever been to the doctor for the kids.

When I worked outside the home, I would take one Sunday a month to cook for the whole month. It took maybe 4 hours (in and out of the kitchen), and then I had a month’s supply of food I never had to think about again.

I can’t say enough good things about that book. 👍

I am a home daycare provider and make homemade baby food for the children in my care. The website previously mentioned “www.wholesomebabyfood.com” is awesome. Making this food is so very easy, I have stored up at least 6 months worth of food so far by purchasing it at our local Farmer’s Market while it’s in season and taking a couple hours out each Saturday to make and freeze the food.

I did feed my daughter purchased food and I have to tell you, what a difference in the homemade stuff, it actually smells like the food that it’s meant to be! 😃
