Baby shower dilemma

I would say just go and give that cute little baby a gift.

This is different than a gay wedding! (At the wedding, you see something immoral/invalid taking place, while at this baby shower, the couple already adopted, the focus is on the baby, not the couple). For this baby shower, you are there as a friend/colleague celebrating the precious little baby!

If you feel uncomfortable, then don’t go but give the baby a gift at least. It’s better than attending+not giving anything.
The couple defiantly is looking for acceptance by everyone. I still like the idea of not going but giving a prayer enrollment card to the baby, it’s gonna need all the prayers it can get. God Bless, Memaw

Contrary to what some people say, the shower is a party for the mother and I would not feel comfortable celebrating this. .
I don’t think a baby shower is a party for the mother. In my experience, it’s a party for female friends and relatives to celebrate a new baby. Around here, all the gifts are for the baby. I’ve bought a lot of baby shower cards over the years too and I’ve yet to see one that says, “I approve of your decision to reproduce. Carry on.”

I don’t think a single parent should adopt unless there’s a really good reason. I mean adopting a child’s not like picking up a pet. Kids should have as good a chance at a normal life as possible. We shouldn’t be juggling them off to just whoever’s next in line.

Because a big chunk of criminals come from single-parent homes. Because while someone’s away working all the time the kid doesn’t get enough emotional support.
I agree with the first part. Kids need both their parents. If I was a single woman, I would definitely not adopt a child, though I might consider being an emergency foster home to help take care of kids who need an immediate safe, caring environment until they are able to be permenantly placed. I don’t think single people or people in same sex relationships should adopt children unless they are the child’s blood relative or a really close friend of the family’s. It would be unfortunate not to have a couple to care for the child, but the tradeoff of allowing the child to stay with their own extended family and loved ones would by more important.

I agree. That definitely falls into the really good reason category. 👍

So…he also thinks a *single *parent adopting a child is child abuse? It is church teaching that single or widowed person should not adopt?

.
He who? Yes, the Church teaches that children should be brought up with a mother and a father if at all possible. But most of those cases (widows and single people) are not intentionally depriving a child of a mother or father.
I can’t find his quote saying this. I’ve found many publications saying he said this…but I don’t find him actually saying it.
As per your post, can you tell me where to find this quote?
Again, I am not sure who “he” is but the most concise statement is here:
Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children, in the sense that their condition of dependency would be used to place them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development. This is gravely immoral and in open contradiction to the principle, recognized also in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, that the best interests of the child, as the weaker and more vulnerable party, are to be the paramount consideration in every case.

I would attend, bring a nice gift, and develop a genuine high esteem towards them. Alienating them will do no good whatever. “Love your neighbor as you do yourself.” Teach by example. Show them nothing but love.

But do you think a single parent adopting is CHILD ABUSE?
Do you think it’s a GOOD IDEA?
As Corki says the church says putting a child in a home without a mother and father is?
A) The best option for the kid?
B) Not the best option for the kid?
A big chunk? How big?

Two parent homes often have two parents working full-time.

.
Thanks for making my point.

Because single parent homes would obviously have an even easier time of it. Right?

That’s exactly what they want. Love is admonishing the sinner, not condoning them in “loving” ways. Mother Angelica calls it “misguided love”. They are alienating themselves. Don’t turn it on us. We don’t have to be mean about it but firm. God Bless, Memaw

So is it child abuse or not if a single or widowed person adopts a child?
Earlier, you said “the Church considers it a form of child abuse to intentionally place a child in a home without a mother and father.”

.
That would depend on the circumstances. If a single person seeks to adopt and deprive a child of a home with both a mother and a father, yes, that would be something the Church opposes. However, I don’t believe the Church would oppose a single relative adopting a child whose parents have died or are unable to care for the child.
Joseph3 said, “Pope Francis called gay adoption discrimination against children,” but so far, I can’t find any quote from him actually saying this.
You have excerpted the Doctrine of the Faith circa 2003 above, right?
Yes, the document I cited was issued by the CDF, signed by (then) Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, in 2003.

I was responding to **your **question, “Is it church (sic) teaching…?” not to Joseph’s post.

One of my fellow employees is a lesbian. She and her partner recently adopted a sweet little baby. Our company is holding a baby shower for them next week in our Conference Room.

Out of kindness and compassion for their new baby should I: (1.) Attend and bring a gift. (2.) Attend and only bring a lovely card. (3.) Attend and bring nothing. (4.) Be a bit too busy with work to attend. (5.) Other suggestions?

Thank you for your thoughts.
Why are you showering babies at work? Don’t they have a bath at home?
