I don’t know exactly how to understand Babylon, with the exception of it symbolizing much more the Capitalism. What Babylon is used for symbolically in the New Testament is the overall disease of sexuality, being used for social gain and financial stability, and all these other glamors associated with this instinctive behavior we have in common with insects of all creatures! There is also a passage in Christ speaking to the seven churches that deals with abortion, namely fornicators being tossed into a sickbed and Christ killing their children with death. The over concurring of this base desire could be symbolized by washing you robe white in the blood of the lamb.

In 1 Peter 5, it probably refers to Rome.

In Rev. 17-18, you’ve got a choice:
  • Rome
  • Jerusalem
    • or even a combination of the two
  • Babylon itself
The description of Babylon in Revelation
  • is based largely on Ezekiel’s oracles against Tyre
  • & has parallels with the gospels - especially St. Matthew
  • is a contrast with the description of the woman in 12
    Hope that helps
