For The past 13 years I was a Bible alone, Christ alone, & Faith alone Believer. I searched from denomination to denomination for the truth. It started in a charismatic church where I was searching for a closer walk with God and became born-again. I prayed the prayer of Faith and confessed that in the front of the church. Within a short 2 or 3 months I realized that there was some strange things happening in this church. I eventually left to join several other churches and ending up in a independent baptist church. They believed in the Book…ie The King James 1611 Scofield study Bible. I got baptized by immersion. I finally left that church for another…another…another etc…etc…etc…Long story short. I started to see that all these churches can’t be right. I mean I’m going from Word of faith to Hyper-dispensationalist…to Seventh day adventist…to liberal reformed churches and their are some serious differences. Their is division to the utmost. So much that I started questioning my Faith. I started to study another faith and that made me actually disbelieve in protestantism. I eventually returned to The One True Holy Apostolic Catholic Church. Now remember I’ve been filled with anti-catholic theology for the past 13 years. A few things I still struggle with are Praying to Saints, The Holy Father (The Pope), and The Blessed Mother Mary. However I accept the teaching of The Church without question. I believe that this Church is The One and Only. Christ is NOT divided. Their is so much to learn about Our Faith that I feel overwhelmed. Any books or study material that would be good for me? Thank You and God Bless, HisGrace:confused:

First of all welcome back home.

Catechism of the Catholic Church is always a good one. I would not read it from cover to cover. Look up the things in there that you are not familiar with. In the bottom of the pages in the CCC there are many references to documents that will lead you to the sources that the CCC is pulling from. I am studying the CCC with a friend. There is also a study done by the US. Catholic Conference of Bishops on it. They also have put out a catechism that is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I am also supplementing the CCC with the Roman Catechism or the Catechism of the Council of Trent.

Another book that I have enjoyed reading is called “This is the faith.” - Canon Francis Ripley available from Tan books.

And if you are really want to delve in to things really heavily then Fundamentals of Catholic Dogmas. IT goes into scriptural and early Church father writings.

These are the ones I am working with. It will be interesting to see what else is suggested.

God bless.

If you get EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network), start watching it. I am what they call a “revert” to the faith, and when I first came back to the Church 5 years ago I knew nothing. Well, I knew some things, but many of my ideas were incorrect - bad catechesis.

I started watching EWTN and still do. I have learned so much from that!

Welcome home!

You’ll probably find it soothing and helpful to read Scott Hahn’s books. Certainly, his conversion story will ring a true note in your ear.

Reading the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” revised in accordance with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II, is absolutely critical.
It was first printed in the US in March 2000.

" The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I have approved…and the publication of which I order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of Catholic Doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the Faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument for ecclesial communion." - Pope John Paul II (pg 5, #3 CCC)

Since you attended non-Catholic Churches, or to know the truth about the history of the Church, please read “Catholicism for Dummies” by Frs. Trigilio and Brighenti.
This is an easy read.

Make certain you have a **“Catholic” Bible **since several of the books are missing from the Protestant versions.

Watching EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network) is also a very good source of accurate catechesis.

Please note, that I also am a revert.

As others have said, WELCOME HOME - the angels are dancing…:dancing:

There are some great suggestions already. One I haven’t seen is “Catholicism for Dummies”. Though I have not personally read it, I have used other books from the “dummies” series and found them good. Also several people here at CAF have confirmed that this book is doctrinally accurate.

I hope that I have not insulted you by this suggestion - but I don’t know your specific level of need and a book such as this can provide a “quick reference” that is both highly usable and an easy read. So Often I have found that “delving into” our rich faith quickly becomes complex…

Another quick suggestion is right here at CA. They have a number of tracts. Go to the home page and look in the library section.

If your looking for apologetic answers to some of the “Anti-Catholic” teachings you have been exposed to, you might consider something like “Answer Me This” by Patrick Madrid and the “Essential Catholic Survival Guide” - which is a compilation of works by CA apologists.

One last thing to remember is to be patient with yoruself. There are many things in our rich faith that, while they are beneficial and even recommended, they are not required. Praying to Mary and/or the saints is one. I do not say this to belittle such devotion but only to say that, if you do not feel comfortable with such devotions, don’t worry about it.

Peace
James

welcome home!

PRMerger, a member here on CAF has a cool blog for “3-minute apologetics”, on a variety of topics, and catholic-convert.com has a lot of great material to read up on.

peace,

Welcome back! My story is similar. I was in the anti-Catholic camps for about 20 years before I came home. I found “Catholicism and Fundamentalism” by Karl Keating very helpful. Also, Scott Hahn and Jimmy Akin are great.

It also helped me to extend my idea of “The Family Of God” to include my brothers and sisters that are with God rather than just those in the pews next to me. When I realized that those who are in Heaven are part of the same Church as those still on earth, it made it easy to talk to them and to ask them to pray for/with me. They are not dead, they are very much alive in Christ!

BTW, check out this video about Mary. I found it to be a great summary and quite inspirational. youtube.com/watch?v=kUdYeYy3NQA

Peace!

Hi, welcome home! 🙂 I am a convert from Protestantism… it might help you to read something by Scott Hahn, such as “Rome Sweet Home” or “Hail Holy Queen”: about Mary. Also the Catechism, and any writings of the Saints are good 🙂

You might find this video helpful if you are wondering about Mary! 🙂

Also Catholic Answers has many good articles:
