Bad Blood With My Brother

My younger brother and I have always been close to each other, nevertheless we have always started arguments over the smallest details. Whenever we disagree over something, it always escalates into yelling at each other and throwing cruel insults. Lately I’ve been trying to be more patient with him, but since he started high school, he has become more impatient and belligerent with me. Even when I try to calmly discuss a problem with him, he starts yelling at me and turns it into a fight. The whole ordeal drives my mother crazy and embarrasses her to no end. I want it to end too, because it saddens me greatly. Please pray for us that we can learn to abandon our pride and handle our matters like mature adults. Some advice might help as well…

I asked Jesus, Mary and Joseph to please help you and your brother to live in harmony, and to help you have patience with your brother.

When you find yourself on the verge of fighting with your brother, perhaps you may want to stop and say the Prayer of St. Francis:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

Remember he is just learning to be mature. It may take time, but he’ll come around. Also, you may fight, but you still love hime! Praying for you both, and especially your poor mother!

I’m guessing you are both young men. If so, you’ll probably just need to battle it out. Often brothers who fight wind up having a real blow out until both sides realize if it goes further someone will get hurt or dead.

Of three serious cases I know of personally, 2 involved brothers throwing bricks at each other (1 made contact, the other a near miss) and the third case had one brother threatening to shoot the other while pointing his gun at him…

Fortunately most of the time things get settled before then. Hope yours does too.👍

I really hope that it doesn’t lead to that. I’m not a violent person by nature unless I reach a certain boiling point (which only my brother can cause). I am 20 years old(21 in July) and he is 16, and we both have Sicilian tempers. Luckily we haven’t had any all-out brawls, and I never want to.
