'Bad' Movies

I’m glad to see we agree about Dr Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange.

I regret to say I have never read anything by Arthur C Clarke. I’ve never been much of a sci fi fan, either in book form or in movies. There are only a handful of sci fi pictures that I can truly say I have enjoyed and would willingly watch again. For instance, the original The Day The Earth Stood Still, with Michael Rennie (the remake was so bad that even the special effects were technically better in the older picture). Also Barbarella and Cocoon. I can’t think of any others offhand, except possibly Futurama.

I’ve read one or two Stephen King books, but never, as it happens, The Shining. I liked Pet Sematary a lot, but found the movie a disappointment.

Considering that this is a Catholic website, I’m thinking perhaps of starting a thread on Jesus movies, in the broadest possible sense: The Robe, Ben Hur, Quo Vadis, Jesus Christ Superstar, Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth, The Life of Brian, The Passion of the Christ … Or has this been done before? I’m new here and just beginning to find my way around.

I’m with all of them except The Life of Brian. Am I the only one that thinks it’s blasphemous? My husband claims I don’t have a sense of humor about this movie!

Wasn’t even aware of Rifftrax, but I saw a preview, and it ain’t the same.

RiffTrax grows on you. I do have a little heartburn because, due to the medium, they can skew a bit raunchier than I’m comfortable with (and you really have to do your homework on their VOD offerings, they place precious few content warnings anymore on them and some of the films they riff do have brief impure content), but normally nothing more than a hard PG-13. But on some of their better outings, I can close my eyes and pretend it’s Mike, Servo and Crow in the theater.

I do recall a failed attempt to revive one MST-ish show, but it seemed abysmal.

Part of the reason that RiffTrax isn’t quite like MST3K was that Mike, Kevin and Bill did a direct-to-video show for Rhino (possibly the one you’re referring to) called The Film Crew, which was cancelled after only four tapes because Rhino had the license at the time to MST3K and (IIRC) Best Brains played hardball, threatening to revoke the license if they didn’t put the kibosh on The Film Crew, which they considered a competing/infringing product.

Thanks for the backstory. Rifftrax doesn’t sound like it’s for me, so I guess I’ll have to stick with old MST films.
