Pope’s are human beings. Fallible sinners just like the rest of us.

Jesus spoke of bad popes when he said:
Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. 44 Truly, I tell you, he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful. (Luke 12:42-46)

Popes are infallible under very specific circumstances when teaching on faith and morals.

The Church makes no claim that the pope is impeccable or even “an all around nice guy.” Impeccability and infallibility are not the same thing. Popes are sinners like the rest of us.

I love the bad Popes.

Not a single one of them bound the faithful with heretical doctrine in an attempt to justify their immoral behavior.

To me that is the best evidence that the Church is being guided by the Holy Spirit.

There’s nothing to explain, infallibility is not the same as impeccability.

God Bless

The vast majority of Popes have set good moral examples. That is a remarkable fact against those who accuse the Church of always having been/being corrupt.

I read this book again every couple of years. It makes me rejoice to see how the Holy Spirit has protected the Church from the sins of the humans who hold office.
