Bad things happen to bad people. Bad things happen to me. Am I bad?

If it sometimes feels like you have the short end of the stick and sometimes ask God, “Why me?” or “What did I do wrong?” Please respond with your thoughts.

I often feel this way, and I’m curious to see how others who may feel the same way deal with it.

Thanks!

Oh, believe me, I think about that all the time.

I’ve seen good people have truly bad things happen in their lives (poverty, illness, etc.).

And I’ve seen rulebreakers go on to success.

But a lot of bad people have pretty good things happen to them too. As Jerry Reed sang “When you’re hot you’re hot, and when you’re not you’re not!”

Bad things and good things happen to both bad and good people. The sun shines on both and it rains on both.

Bad things do not just happen to bad people.

Death is the ultimate bad thing and it happens to everybody.

Bad things happen to everyone, good and bad. I only wish that Karma was real and that bad things only happened to bad people, but that’s not how it works. Good things happen to good and bad people also- Jesus himself pointed in Mathew 5:44-45:

“But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.

If you are experiencing trials, use them to increase in the graces of faith, hope and love and accept them with humility. Pray much.

Well, from a purely logical perspective, no.

It is well known that bad things can happen to good people, or there would be no childhood cancer, for example. So it’s not true that bad things happen only to bad people. So bad things happening to someone is not an indication of badness.

So, bad things happen to all kinds of people. Bad things happen to you, so you are some kind of person. (That’s not perticularly good logic either, but it would be tedious to go into the rest of it. 🙂 )

Bad things happen because we are in a fallen world. Aside from natural bad things (like floods or disease), bad things happen to us because all people have free will, some people make bad choices with their free will, and the external consequences of those bad actions frequently fall on someone other than the one who made the bad choice. Often, they fall on people who haven’t even met the person who made the bad choice.

However, it is important to remember Rom. 8:28: “And we know that to them that love God, all things work together unto good, to such as, according to his purpose, are called to be saints.” (Douay-Rheims)

Which is to say, that just because something seems bad, or maybe is bad, it doesn’t mean that God isn’t working for your soul’s good with it. He can, and He will, if you let Him. (Not that that’s easy!)

Instead ask yourself why not me.Rubbish happens to most people. They can pray daily and be most observant. You exist in this veil of tears.

It’s true that bad things happen to bad people. However, for millennia people have been asking the question, “Why does God let bad things happen to good people?”

In other words, bad things happen to…people.

Would you please give an example or two of what’s bad that’s happening to you?

Think of the parable where one house was built on rock and the other built on sand. The storm hit both houses equally. The house on the rock survived because of its foundation, not because it had an easier time.

Good and bad happens to all human beings.

Sometimes the grass looks greener in the other fellow’s yard, but we don’t see all that happens in their lives.

Don’t try and compare your life to those of others. Be content with whatever God allows in your life.

I have done good things to help protect or help someone and I get told it’s wrong or to stop. I have been yelled at for doing the job I am told to do also. Life is nuts sometimes for the strangest reasons.

Without the examples, I will try to provide a solution in the dark. Maybe you are too kind and too good to others and neglect yourself and your needs, get taken advantage of, and/or become a door mat.

You probably need to be more discriminating to who you are good and kind to and with. That’s where “wise as a serpent, gentle as a lamb” comes in.

Then you are doing the work of God, and getting insulted for it. That’s spiritual gold, there! 🙂

From Mt 5
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
** Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.** Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Thanks! At work I have a job to do and I try to do it the best I can.

Like Erma Bombeck said, The grass is always greener over the septic tank.

Gigi, I disagree. I don’t believe we should only be good and kind to certain people.

OP, when diagnosed with breast cancer, I read of some who said “Why Me?”. A logical answer to that question might be “Then Who?”. My sister, my mother, a friend, a stranger? Much easier to face the bad stuff with this approach.

God Bless You.

Thanks for the replies.

I purposely made the inquiry vague as I wanted to garner as much of an objective response as possible. Sometimes when you hear one person’s woes, it may not seem relevant when compared to others. I fully understand this.

To give a little insight on why I created this post…I am the sole provider for my family. My wife stays at home to raise our kids. My children have special needs. Financially, we’re not really struggling, although we have to be frugal to get by. My biggest heartache are my kids. I love them very much, and by no means do I regret having them. I just wish I could do more to help them. Why did they have to be born this way? I speculate on what they may go through growing up and it breaks my heart. “Why me?” was the easiest way I could solicit a response, but to more accurate, it’s more “Why them?” They’re innocent. Yet, they face an uphill battle in a cruel world. An extended family support system is pretty much non-existent for us, so my wife and I are the only ones my children can count on.

Sorry, didn’t mean to ramble…I love my family. I just feel so helpless for them sometimes, and as a father and husband, I consider that a failure in my duties.

Thanks again, and if you happen to have a few seconds of time, I’d greatly appreciate a prayer for my family.

God bless!

Mr. Lonely,

God certainly knew what he was doing when He blessed you with your children. It is always hard to watch our children in pain or struggling. The only advice I can offer is try not to speculate on their future woes. God will give them the grace they need to overcome rudeness, obstacles, or plain old meanies. Trust in God.

I’m praying for your family.

God Bless You.
