In the past, I used to have what I’d call ‘bad thoughts’. These usually were more of fears of doing things such as (Murder, renouncing God, drugs, illicit sex), sometimes curse words and blasphemies were repeated in my mind without my consent.

I eventually got over these after getting into church.

Now my 8 year old cousin is having these, her mother freaks out and cries when it happens, and her dad tells her she’s going to hell for it. They aren’t Catholic, and are getting divorced. Her mother thinks she needs a shrink.

Our side of the family is a bit more supportive of her (she spends the night every weekend, sometimes more), what should we tell her? How should we handle this?

We assure her they are just thoughts and all…

Your birthday tells me your a teenager and lemme tell you many, many teens, including myself, go through a “bad thought” phase. It’s not just you, dont worry. I dont know if it’s hormones themselves or hormones mixed with high school or what, but they can make you think some incredibly wierd or scary things.

I feel sorry that your uncle thinks your cousin is going to hell and your aunt is having a hard time dealing with it. I cant claim to be a doctor, but I know being a kid in the 21st century isnt that fun. A psychologist/psychiatrist could be the answer if your cousin cant talk about it with family. You might be thinking how hormones could have anything to do with it. They may or may not be a factor. Girls as young as 9 years old are developing breasts and hitting puberty, that’s a fact. Or it could be anything in her environment. I dont know, that’s where a doctor comes in handy.

It sounds cliche, but having someone not judgemental to talk to works wonders. Good luck.

With a mom and dad like that–she probably will need a shrink!

I, too, sometimes have horrible thoughts of things of violence, or harm coming to loved ones and the saddness I would feel–I think everyone experiences these things, but most think there is something wrong with them because their minds do that and are afraid to admit it. They are reproachful of those who do admit it because it it’es not “right”. I believe it’s normal. Some thoughts, I think, come from a lazy mind, and some I’m sure are of demonic influence. The way I handle it is I usually say aloud or in my mind “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus”. I don’t know where I heard it, but I’ve heard that Satan flees from the name of Christ. Also, sometimes I say a little rhyme/prayer I made up for when I feel the lonliness of a potential loss of a loved one. I say “Mother Mary, stand beside me. To your Son, our Savior, guide me.”

It works. The thoughts leave and a peace replaces fear.

I’ll say a prayer for your cousin.

Hold a container over a boiling teapot’s spout so as to collect some steam in the container. Then ask her to gently breath in the container so as to blow the steam away.

Explain the concept of what she just accomplished. The evil one drifts ideas into our thoughts without permission. As soon as we are aware we can ask God to breath the evil thoughts away for us. Soon, like yours, they will drift beyond your awareness.

He also flees at the name of the Blessed Mother. A brown scapular, rosary, Miraculous Medal and holy water would also assist. Don’t worry. Noone goes to hell for thoughts, in my opinion.:whacky:
