Hi there. I have a question that I would love some opinions on. So, is it bad to spend a decent amount of money on something of this world? I’ve been thinking about purchasing a video game console for about $325, is that bad? I know that God calls us to be humble and that things of this world are useless, but would it disappoint God if I purchased this? I know it’s gonna do nothing to help me get to Heaven, but with moderation, it shouldn’t lead me away from Heaven either. I’m really struggling because I don’t know if I need to be humble and acknowledge that this is just something of this world that will mean nothing in the end, or if it would be okay if I bought this. Thanks guys, God Bless.

Will you be neglecting other responsibilities because of this purchase (i.e. rent, bills, etc…)? Will you play the game in moderation and not let it overtake your time?

Having things that make us happy is not sinful. It’s just when they become the focus of our lives that it’s a problem.

All good gifts - come down from Heaven ( book of James )

If you were monk - I’d say - bad !
But an average Catholic - that needs a lil diversion from time to time…fine.

But be careful of the violent games etc

By what Catholic moral reasoning would it be better to buy the video game rather than give the money to the poor?

Nothing we have in this world really matters in the end, but we all have and enjoy what we have. It’s just a matter of moderation and responsibility as others have said.

You’ve never had a hobby that cost money? Spent money on entertainment?

OP: buy the video game console and enjoy it. As others have said use it in moderation, and don’t let it interfere with life duties.

If it was me I would weigh up how much I need it vs not,to decide whether to buy it or to instead use that money to help a charity etc.
For example,if it’s a hobby that really interests you and you are going to get good use of it over the year instead of just using it for a week or month and then throwing it into the back of a cupboard then it seems like a good investment.
If on the other hand,it is an “excess” purchase and you aren’t really than into it,then I would consider using that money for charity.
Like others mentioned, everyone has hobbies that they spend money on whether makeup, beautifying their home with nice table wear, books or music etc and that’s ok in moderation and natural providing that it doesn’t take the main focus or make a person self absorbed and distract from helping others.

If you were my son, I’d say, “Are you out of your mind? $325 for a game consol?”

But since you’re not my son, I say go for it. 😎

Probably the same reasoning Christ employed when he was anointed with a jar of expensive perfume. I think it was Judas that was outraged???

Most of us don’t need most of what we have.

I work hard for what I earn. I don’t work to watch it pile up in my bank account and I don’t spend it on drivel. I buy things I need and I buy things I want and I save some as well.

If a $325 gaming console isn’t going to break the OPs bank or otherwise put him in financial straits, he should buy it.

A PS4 (or whatever it is) doesn’t need priestly intervention for 99.9% of us. I don’t need a lot of stuff - and even of what I need I could spend less. But to what end?

The implied question is - was it necessary?

No, in reality, it probably wasn’t.

LOL I have to agree with this. I don’t get it either.

But to each their own. There are folks who will never understand things I buy either.

I’m not asking this to be snarky, It’s a genuine question. Are you saying that you only have the bare necessities?

Short answer- yes, buy it. Remember that you always have the option of balancing your conscience by giving some of your time/money to those in need.

My practical side thinks that’s an insane price, lol! But then, I raise a family in a high cost-of-living area, and you may be a single person. We have second-hand video game shops in my town that sell gently used consoles at a fraction of that price, provided you could survive with a PS-3 instead of a PS-4.

There are more classics for PS3 as well…

But, IMO, XBox is the way to go… Either a 1 or a 360

Oh, I wasn’t looking to argue. I just wanted to know a bit more about your position. I appreciate the explanation.
