Band of Brothers (mini-series)

I just finished a few days ago and I am floored by it. Amazing writing, narratives, character development (for the most part), cinematography, music and production value.

It also doesn’t hurt that Maj. Richard “Dick” Winters, the leader of Easy Company, speaks of God in a positive light, at least in passing.

Also, for anyone who has Netflix, WWII in HD, Charles Scheffel, rifle platoon leader, was a devote Christian till his death.

I wanted to finish the book before watching the series but didn’t make it!

It is a great series. Maj. Dick Winters died not long ago…a year or two, I think.

The only thing that ruined it for me was the profanity. However, seeing authentic German vehicles in authentic camouflage floored me, along with Allied vehicles.

Do you honestly think that soldiers fighting the war used phrases like “Golly gee! Here come the Germans! Let’s get the heck out of here!”?

The profanity only adds to realistic telling of the story.

My dad was a World War II vet and he and the other veterans would get together to talk about what they experienced during the war. These were all combat veterans. They rarely told their families anything. I only learned a handful of things my dad experienced and mostly when he and I were older. He always spoke in a matter of fact way. He told it just it like it happened with little emotion. All those vets cared about was being in a country where no one was shooting at them or dropping bombs on their heads. They all got married and had families. The war was behind them.

One account he told me personified what those vets wanted during the war - to survive. As far as combat, he put it this way: “They shoot at you. You shoot at them.” It was as if he was describing hunting. You died or you didn’t die. I found out what this felt like when I was pulled from my car, knocked to the ground and had a gun pressed against my head. I wasn’t scared. I was going to die or not die.

They can keep their profanity. It was common to not swear, and if so, only very rarely - about anything.

When watching the series I never thought to myself “Wow, the swearing TOTALLY makes it realistic! Such a good decision by the screenwriter and director!” nor did it distract my viewing. In fact, I barely even remember the swearing.
