So I went to mass tonight…and I’m beginning to become uncomfortable. During communion the “band” (it’s a life teen mass) is singing and using an electric guitar. I find this very distracting while I’m trying to pray and thank God for allowing me to receive the Body and Build of his only son.
I’m starting to feel like there should be lighters being held up in the air through the guitar solo.
Does anyone else have the problem of music playing during communion?
Don’t get me wrong…I’m young but I find it disrespectful to have a band playing while we’re supposed to be meditating one of the mysteries of faith.
Just a thought…

The band at the church I have been attending also plays and sings during communion. The parish is supposed to sing along until their turns to go in line. I find it quite distracting, too.

Don’t go to the LifeTeen Mass. It will always be that way. You’ll always be bothered by it. Find another Mass. Simple.

I don’t like life-teen mass. Even when I was a teen, I fealt there was no respect with beating a drum with the same beat (ba dum dum dum da tsh, ba dum dum dum da tsh).

Try an early Mass on Sunday morning. This is usually where you get your more orthodox music and less annoying drum beats.

I work every Sunday morning (I know I’m not supposed to) so there for I’m not able to go on Sunday mornings. I have taken Sunday’s off to go to a TLM and a NO in Latin both we’re awesome. I’m just able to do it. I think it might be time to go to the Saturday vigils they are usual more traditional.

On working on Sunday
I don’t want to sound unorthodox when I say this, but some people don’t have a choice when they can work (in particular on Sunday). I wouldn’t fault yourself for that, unless you were just doing it to get extra money, then I would reevaluate things. Obviously a good orthodox priest could give you some good information on that subject.

On Going to a more traditional Mass
That is something I would do, and have done. I don’t want to sound like an individual in support of SSPX, but I really wish the Catholic Church didn’t go with the life teen Mass and the beating of drums. To me this takes away with what is sacred. Of course I want more Latin and more people dressing for Mass appropriatly as if they were meeting the bridegroom for the first time.

well in the first place if I had a problem with guitar or rock style music I would not be within 1000 yds of a Lifeteen Mass in the first place. I would find a Mass at my parish or a neighboring parish that had music more congenial to me. I would not go to a Mass where I know the music is going to be loud guitar music and then complain about it.

The mass I go to that has this music playing isn’t even the Life Teen mass. I shudder to think what that is like.

To be honest, even though I am a member of the choir, I would rather if, after Communion, there was complete silence. Not even an organ.

Of course, we can’t have everything we want…

I thought you were coming to my parish!

We have a 6:30pm & 8:30pm!
No LifeTeen.

Oooops, I just saw that this is from the 1st.
I hope you joined us tonight!

I’m in her area. She doesn’t have much else offered on Sunday night.
I think you missed the other thread where she stated the time problem.
It’s LifeTeen or no mass in most of the parishes.

We don’t use lighters anymore, it’s cell phones 🙂 😉

It sounds like a youth Mass, they are getting popluar and usually done on Sunday evening.

a neighboring parish has Lifeteen, and I do attend sometimes when work has kept me from a complete Mass on Sunday in my own parish. In the 5 yrs I have been here I have always found youth from this parish who participate to be very well versed in their faith, very active in service to the Church and community, and good evangelizers among their peers. At these Masses, you can hear a pin drop during the Consecration and in the period of silence, which is profound, after communion.

The music is not my choice, but it does speak to them, is performed very competently, the music group also gives generously of their time without compensation to play for youth retreats and rallies around the diocese. This group is also very liturgically aware, and seems to know what music ministers must know to serve the liturgy. They play music with appropriate lyrics for the part of the Mass, appropriate in tone and tempo as well. They played for a Y2K event even the traditional Latin hymns for adoration and benediction, and the music was superb. All lifeteen Masses are not the same.

when I am forced to attend any Mass with music that grates and distracts (such as the old folks who play at the regular morning Mass in my old parish, who unfortunately do not all use the same key and tempo) I offer it up for those who have no recourse to Mass and the Eucharist.

As much as the church is constantly trying to keep “up to date” i guess this is just one of its “efforts”. music from the organ may seem like an “orthodox” music…but in the past…the organ was new to them too! and they took some time getting used to. I guess having new instruments for mass may be quite a step of us Catholics (especially when we are always so comfortable with the hymns sung in church).

I am a youth myself, and my Parish in Singapore do have Youth Masses once in a while of which i thought it’s indeed a good idea as many youths (in Singapore) are slipping out of Church, spending their Sunday mornings in bed because of the whole “i think Mass is boring”. Thus, i guess the whole idea of the Youth Mass is to bring these youths back too.

In relation to your topic, i totally agree having the guitar solo and all is definately WAY TO DISTRACTING for my own little post-Communion prayer. It’s either complete silence or just the keyboard going for me… I rather not the choir sing if possible 😛

I appericate all of your support! You sound like a great person!
I wasn’t able to attend your parish last night, although I did go to mass. I’m hoping I will be able to this coming Sunday!
Have a great week! 👍
