I was told by a Baptist friend that Catholics baptism is not valid because Catholics do not have them immersed.
What do you say to this person ?
Do most protestants believe that we must be “immersed” ?

Well the Catholic Church was the first to baptise so I wouldn’t say the founders of something are not doing what they started right. It doesn’t matter if immersed or dipped or poured, it comes down to the water blessed and the name of the trinity being used properly for validation.
 
The Catholic church is moving to immersion. I was told this by my RCIA instructor.

A new church close to me has a baptismal basin (what’s it called?) built into the floor of the sanctuary to the right of the altar.

After I’m baptized at Easter Vigil, I’ll let you know how fully immersed I get. I’ve heard my priest really likes the holy water.

I’d have a couple of questions:
  1. Does he believe baptism to be symbolic? If it’s merely symbolic then in what why is baptism “valid” or “not valid”?
  2. Does he believe baptism to be salvific? If so, then isn’t insisting upon a particular form for baptism to be valid really works-based salvation?

I think that is a good approach to take with Protestants who try to attack Catholicism. Come back at them with a question. Let’s put them on the spot for a change.

It’s against my nature to attack someone else’s religion because I’m so happy with my own. I’ll admit here and now that I am very ignorant of most Protestant teachings. I’d love to hear the explanation for “once saved, always saved”. How do you live without Confession?

The Catholic Church already does immerse. It is only one rite which pours, the Latin. I also would tell your friend to check out the Didache as per Christian baptism by pouring or immersing. The Didache validates that early Christians did, in fact, pour.

Many scholars and theologians have called the Didache pronounced (did-ak-ay) the first Catechism as it was written prior to some books of Sacred Scripture.

I would ask your friend where it says in Sacred Scripture that baptism is only valid if by immersion. What matters is whether or not the person was baptized in the name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. This can be done by pouring or immersing.

I would also ask him how many other Protestant baptisms this would invalidate, because Catholics are not the only ones who pour. For something that is taken as symbolic by Baptists, why do they care whether or not it is by pouring or immersing? I would also ask your friend who made his interpretation infallible and how he can possibly judge the validity of another Christian’s baptism. I thought only God judged?

The Catholic man waded in up to his stomach. “How about now?” he asked. The Baptist again said “No”.

The Catholic man waded all the way down uder the water. He popped back up and said “How was that?” “That’s it!” said the Baptist.

ask her by what authority she decides what is and is not a valid baptism. Did Jesus Christ give her this authority? If not, to whom did he give authority. You might also remind her that the norm for baptism of adults in the Catholic Church is indeed immersion, but pouring or sprinkling are also valid.
