Baptised in the name of the lord vs. in the name of the Trinity

I am talking with a fundamentalist and one of his objections to the Catholic Church is that Baptism doesn’t need to be in the trinitarian form and that simply in the name of Jesus is suffeciant. Saying that except in Jesus’ commision it is always “Be Baptised in the name of the Lord”. What should I say to this? Thanks and God bless.

When you do something “in the name of” someone, you are saying that you believe everything that person teaches. So if you baptize in the name of Jesus, you believe everything that Jesus teaches.

So… what did Jesus teach? To baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pretty simple, eh?

Just want to add that in retrospect there existed many baptisms. There was John’s baptism, there was some pagan baptisms, some Jewish baptisms, and of course there there was Jesus’ baptism.

How did Jesus teach us to baptize? He taught but one method, to which was in the name of the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. Remember the words “Trinity or Trinitarium” were not coined yet, and weren’t for about another 300 years, so to distinguish among the many baptism, the apostles would simply say the baptism in “Jesus name”.

Again, what formula did Jesus teach us???
