Hello:

I am participating in an RCIA program with intent to be baptized on Easter.

My question is with regard to restitution prior to baptism. I am nervous to raise this question with the priest at this point considering the gravity of my sins and considering I am not yet baptized, and as such, I’m concerned the seal of confession does not apply as I cannot yet receive the sacrament of confession.

Between 10-15 years ago (prior to being 18), I committed major monetary theft. Because it was so long ago, I have no way to know the exact amounts taken and the victim has since passed.

For restitution purposes, I have valued it at $10k. And considering that it was a decade or more ago, I feel it would be right to make restitution on this amount three times over to their heirs.

So far, I have made restitution for $6000, or 20% of what I intend to repay.

With that said, am I able to be baptized prior to completing this restitution? Or must I delay baptism until I’ve completed such acts of restorative justice?

My next question is this: are my retributive efforts valid or must a priest specifically tell me the requirements of restitution?

Thank you in advance.
