John’s baptism was not the same baptism the Church performs today. John called people to repentance and to symbolize that repentance through the washing of water, but the sacramental baptism of Jesus is “from above” and is both water and Spirit and is a rite of Christian initiation. The sacrament of baptism performed by the Church really began at Pentecost, it truly washes away sin, and conforms the baptized to Christ, particularly bringing the Christian into Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, and allows the to rise up a new and regenerated person.
