If you read my post I said it WAS A JOKE! And it WAS an old joke from the times.

I have no idea how old you are but you can’t change what people said back then. And there were many jokes made at the time.

I’m sure back in the 60s everyone hearing the joke understood that the Vat. IV cardinal would be a woman. That’s not the first thing that comes to mind today, witness Tim’s reaction.

We’ve not had a baptism that can be recalled since the parish merged with a neighboring parish. Before that, all were made part of the Mass, with all concerned parties up front at the baptismal font. Father would have the parents and godparents read some prepared statement regarding their expectations for the candidate. I suspect there was a list of virtues and qualities to select–and some not listed. One may wish for infant Hilda Mathilda a kind and generous heart.…obedience and tending to chores…or some profound athletic ability. All were then prompted to applaud and Mass continued.
 
My current parish priest will ask the congregation to congratulate the newly baptized along with the parents and godparents after they have gotten the baptismal candle. A previous priest in my parish would pick up the newly baptized infant from the parents or godparents then bring them forward and say please welcome to the parish family “child’s name” then the congregation would applaud without lifting up the child.

My parish does baptisms within Masses, but not sure if anyone has requested to be done outside of a Mass.
