I didn’t even know that there was a problem with not having your child baptized outside your parish. I had my first two baptized in the parish where I was baptized, confirmed and married. In the first instance, that was 3 provinces away from my proper parish and in the second instance in another diocese even if within the same province.

It was only after I’d been a parish secretary for a while that I stumbled onto an entry in the parish baptismal register where a pastor had entered a baptism that had occurred somewhere else and noted that this baptism had been celebrated outside the parish without his permission. That’s when I looked at Canon Law and discovered that my former pastor should have asked if I had my present pastor’s permission to have my children baptized in my birth parish.

From that point on I, any time I had to write a letter to another parish to say that parents had taken the baptismal preparation in our parish, I alway made a point of noting that our pastor had given his permission for the parents to have their child baptized outside the parish.
