My grandson is being baptized on Saturday. It is a private baptism with just family. Are we expected to give a monetary gift to the priest?

It may be the custom to do so. (usually $20/25 with a thank you note). You should not be expected to and never required to do so.
 
no - but there are costs to light and heat/cool the building. A good will offering can be made, but not necessary.

Sacraments are not bought.
 
I’ve offered a “thank you” for the baptisms of all of my kids…those done “privately” and those within a Mass. It’s not a requirement, but it is a nice gesture.
