Hi,

I am a practicing Catholic and my fiance is Jewish, but non practicing. We are hoping to have a baby in the near future. We have full intent to raise our child in the church, but was wondering if would be able to have a baptism if only one parent is Catholic and were married outside of the church. Thank you, Jessica

Yes it is possible for you to baptize your baby even if you are not married in the Church. At least one parent must approve and you must ask for the sacrament in person, and attend pre-baptismal classes, and be interviewed by the pastor or person he delegates. He is required by canon law to determine that the child will be raised Catholic. If he has doubts, based on what you tell him, he may delay (not deny) the sacrament until such assurance is forthcoming. In the case of a non-Catholic parent he will probably want to make sure that parent does not object. It is now up to you to decide if you want to raise this child Catholic, and place obligations on him which you have yourself have, at least for the time being, decided not disobey.

Yes. It is possible.

You will be able to have a baptism with only one parent Catholic. But - why would you even consider marrying outside the Church? You say you are a practicing Catholic. If you marry outside the Church (that, to me, says that a priest is not being consulted, and no dispensation is being asked for), then you will not be validly married. Why would a practicing Catholic do this? You would be living in mortal sin. Please think again. Your immortal soul is much too important for this.

The OP may not know that you can marry outside of the Church validly and licitly with the proper dispensations. I would encourage the OP to speak with her fiance about marrying in the Church, and speak with her priest about options for being permitted to marry elsewhere.

I have a good priest friend who had a parishoner marry a Jew. He was personally invited by the Rabbi to assist in the ceremony at the Temple. After all the proper paperwork was filled out, this marriage was considered to be valid in the eyes of the Church, and my friend was extremely honored and humbled to be able to assist in officiating at a wedding in a Temple.

To the OP, please talk to your fiance and your priest.
