Hi,
Thank you very much for allowing me be part of this forum. I think this forum is very helpfull. I was wondering if someone can help with information and feedback about Baptism.

So, myself (Catholic) and my wife (Mormon) just had our first baby. And I was wondering if its ok to have her Bpatized by the Catholic Church and by the Mormon Church? Or what is the best recomendation about Baptizing if the parents belong to two diferent religions.

Any feedback and information greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for helping us out!

If you got married in the Catholic Church or in your wife’s church with a dispensation you promised to do everything in your power to have your child baptized in the Catholic Church and raised Catholic.

Catholics believe in ONE Baptism for the remission of sins (not what Mormons believe) and you can’t have your child baptized in the Catholic Church and then in another Church.

My understanding is that LDS doesn’t baptise children below the age of 8.

But no, you cannot have your child baptized in 2 different churches.

Morman baptism is not valid. Mormans are not Christians -

Baptize your child and raise her as a Catholic.

So if the LDS does not recognize Baptism. Lets say my child is baptize and she is raised both Mormon & Catholic. Then later in life she has the free will to decide what religion she wants to follow.
Is this wrong? Am I a bad parent or person?

Not to bash because I believe that in the end the children do have the right and FREE WILL to choose. However it’s my personal opinion that in the informative years it’s BEST to TEACH them and RAISE them in ONE faith so that they will have a firm, solid foundation to base their judgment and decisions on. That’s what helps them form a good conscience and good decisions in the future.

It’s just like discipline: Parents when it comes to discipline need to be on the same page so the child knows what’s right and what’s wrong. Children learn and are more grounded when the parents are on the same page. The same can be said for parents when they share the same FAITH.

That’s not to say that parents can’t be of different faiths, but they really should agree to raise the child in ONE faith and at the right, more age appropriate time, answer the child’s questions about the other parent’s faith.

I honestly believe that raising them in “both” sets them up for confusion and a disconnect with God, especially when those faiths can be polar opposites in some areas. Such as the Mormon and Catholic Faith can be.

Good Luck!

One cannot be Mormon and Catholic. One cannot be a Christian and a non-Chistian at the same time.

Remember when you applied for the Disparity of Cult to marry a non-Christian? During that process, you promised to do all in your power to raise your children as Catholics. It is your duty to do all you can to honor that promise in the vary same way you honor your other marital vows.

So if the LDS does not recognize Baptism.
The LDS church does not recognize Catholic baptism as valid.
The Catholic Church does not recognize LDS baptism as valid.

The Catholic Church baptizes for the remission of Original Sin and incorporation into the Body of Christ (the Church).

The LDS church baptizes for different reasons and their baptism is at age 8.
Lets say my child is baptize and she is raised both Mormon & Catholic.
A person cannot be raised both Mormon and Catholic. These are two different religions.

You are obligated to raise your child in the Catholic Church.
Then later in life she has the free will to decide what religion she wants to follow.
Is this wrong?
Yes. This is wrong. First, the LDS is a false church with false ideas about God. The Catholic Church holds the fullness of truth and you are obligated to that truth and to teach it to your child.

The idea that you can let the child “choose” their religion is absolutely incompatible with Catholic teaching. It is your moral obligation to raise your child Catholic.
Am I a bad parent or person?
I don’t know how I’d classify the situation.

Did you NOT talk about this BEFORE you married?

What about your marital preparation for marriage in the Catholic Church? You were required to get a dispensation from the Bishop to marry a non-Christian (Mormons are not Christians) and you had to complete paperwork stating you would raise your children Catholic and your fiance had to be made aware of this promise. So surely this was discussed with the priest who was preparing you for marriag.

I don’t understand how you married a Mormon knowing nothing about her religion or that it was a completely different belief system than yours.

I am sorry if this sounds harsh, but it seems you are totally ignorant of your own faith, your wife’s faith, and had no prior discussions about how you would raise children. That doesn’t sound like a good recipe for marriage.

Welcome to the Forum! Unfortunately your first foray in is going to bring out some harsh responses. It’s that serious a question and goes deep into the heart of being Catholic.

I agree with the other posters. It isn’t ok to have a child become Catholic by Baptism and then try to make them also another religion as well. You as a Catholic must raise your child Catholic. You are also obligated by Canon Law to arrange Baptism within the first weeks of life. I am also mystified as to how your marriage preparation did not raise this question and what was decided then. Are you married according to the laws of the Catholic Church? Maybe your discernment should be starting there.

Hi all,
First of all I want to say thank you for all your comments. I do not take it personal, my apologies if my question and comments sound ignorant. My intention was not offend nor be rude to anyone.

However i do thank you for your honest answers!
