So my sweet little Ava Grace will be baptized this Sunday. She will be our family’s first “craddle Catholic” and we’ve very excited. A deacon will be baptizing her and three other babies.

Our parish does not charge for this… are we supposed to tip the Deacon? If so… how much?

Our church has a free will donation policy…no charge…So it’s entirely up to you. The usual response is a minimum of $25. If your deacon provided your baptismal prep, more than likely he will be grateful for any gift you provide. Congratulations to you and your little one! The greatest tip for the deacon will be for him to see you regularly at church bringing your little one up in the church as you will vow at the baptism.

Such “tips” are called stipends. Some parishes encourage people to give a stipend for such services and others don’t. Contact your parish office to find out if it would be acceptable at your parish. And congratulations on the baptism of Ava Grace. God’s richest blessings on her and you all!

I am in RCIA. Does that apply to me too? I would love to tip my priests as I have driven them crazy with my questions?

Ted… you & I must be cosmic twins because I drove my Priests crazy too! And everyone else in the class… I became known(affectionatly no doubt?) as that crazy woman who asks too many questions!

I doubt your Priests would like tips… as someone else said they are blessed by having enthusiastic, faithful parishoners. 🙂

Blessings to you in your journey!

Yes it would be fitting to offer a stipend. We usually give our Priest $100.00. but whatever you can afford would be wonderfully welcomed I am sure.

Most priests do not have huge incomes or resources unless they inherit from relatives. The Mass stipend, which has been about $10 everywhere I have been goes to the priest who says the Mass. Some of those Mass requests are sent off to mission priests who have real need for financial support of any kind. Most priests that I know appreciate a small gift of money and a nice card at Christmas. The stipend for Baptisms, weddings, and funerals often goes for the most part to the parish to cover the additional cost, but a small gift, I would hesitate to call it a tip, is appreciated by most priests. When my wife and I were married we gave the priest, who was a personal friend of my wife, a small gift. I was a grad student at the time with my wife unemployed. He gave it back and said that we would be needing it more than him. Had our circumstance been different, I am sure he would have accepted it with gratitude. 👍

Wow… That is very generous. We could never in a gazzillion years afford $100.00. We don’t spend that much money on anything… the more kids we have, the more poor we become… (in a good way though 😉 ) But we could afford $25.00 … hopefully that will show our appreciation.

Thank you all for your kind answers. I will try to do so.

Carol Marie the gift is from the heart so if you can afford $25.00 then I am sure it will be appreciated. Hopefully you will keep a record of this day and celebrate it like her birthday every year. I wish I had known to do this years ago. That is the greatest day of our lives the day we became a part of God’s family the church and had original sin removed. May God Bless you all and little Ava to on this great day.🙂

Hi all,

I’m also in RCIA and I was wondering the same thing about giving to the church or to the priest. 🙂

After working for priests I see that this is always appreciated. But don’t go overboard just a gift from the heart.
