Baptism is a means that Christ uses to apply the merits of the Cross which include the forgiveness of sins. The Sacrament of Baptism forgives personal sins if there are any and washes away Original sin.

Baptism is a mere instrument of God, just like the mud was an instrument for Jesus when curing the blind man.

The efficient cause of justification the merciful God who washes and sanctifies gratuitously. The meritorious cause is our Lord Jesus Christ, who merited for us justification by His most holy passion on the wood of the cross. (cf. Trent decree on Justification, Session VI, Jan. 13, 1547)

As itsjustdave1988 said above Baptism removes both original sin and personal sin. Of course if you commit mortal sins after baptism then you have to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation to confess.
