I am in the RCIA program and have a question about baptism. I was baptized in a non-denominational church years ago. I don’t have any records and am not sure it was a trinitarian baptism. I have been told that the baptism wasn’t valid and should have a valid baptism. My question is if I have the valid baptism and the previous baptism was valid will all previous sins still be forgiven? Thanks,

The church believes that there is only 1 baptism for the forgivness of sins. (see your creeds) If the first one was valid, then that was it and getting baptized a second time does nothing, but the church is saying the 1st one was not valid so your upcoming baptism will be the 1.

One thing about joining the church is that you agree to submit to the church and her teachings, and if the church says your first baptism was not valid, then submit to that, and take refuge in the fact, that you are coming up to the point when all of your past sins will be forgiven at your baptism and you will have a clean slate with with to use to please God and to begin your new life as one of His children.

Let’s assume that you’re accepting your priest’s word on the subject. Let’s further assume that he is wrong (just an assumption–I’m not saying that he is).

First time you go to confession you confess those sins since your new baptism. Because you’re confessing in good faith, ALL your sins are forgiven… even those before the baptism.

Thank you for your answers to my questions on baptism. It has really helped.

Could you call the old church and ask them how they baptize people? You can tell them you just couldn’t remember if you were baptized in the name of The Father, Son, And Holy Spirit or some other way.

The icon with the sunglasses is a good one for those of us who have NOT been baptized to use.

I’m totally ashamed. I’d like to wear a hood over my head so no one would know that I was the One that was a heathen, sinner for 50 years. I wasn’t a heathen, sinner.

Two other adults will be baptized with me are an oriental man who is most likely converting from a non-Christian faith and a twenty-something young lady.

I apologize for my tone, but my RCIA director and the priest responsible for RCIA are mentally MIA at this important time.

HaHaHa! I was a total heathen and sinner AND I was baptised and raised Catholic. We are all sinners and God loves us anyway.

I say BE POSITIVE! Aren’t you happy that you have come to the realization where as some people never have the opportunity to know God? Good thing you are on the forums for some support. Keep at it. You’ll be fine!

I consider baptism to be one of the greatest things that ever happened to me in my entire life.

No

If you receive Conditional Baptism, you should also go to Confession. Both take place BEFORE the Easter Vigil and not in a public liturgical manner. If you were previously validly Baptized then the Conditional Baptism has no effect and the Confession does. If you were not prevously validly Baptized. Then the confession has no effect Sacramentally and you are validly Baptized during the Conditional Baptism, which forgives all sins.

Thank you everyone for the advice. It has been very helpful. Again, Thanks 😃

Seems that with the lack of records, even if the old Church claims to baptize as Catholics do, a conditional baptism would still be necessary, just in case.
