My 6 year old daughter was bapized last Sunday and I am beginning to question the validity. I attended the baptism classes at my church and the instructor told the class we needed to choose a baptismal name for our child. During the ceremony, the priest asked for my daughter’s name and I told him Elizabeth (the Saint’s name that I chose). He continued on with the rituals and completed the ceremony. Afterwards as he was signing her certificate he became confused and told me I should have given him my daughter’s ACTUAL name instead of a Saint’s name. I have tried to research this but I’m getting conflicting answers. Is my daughter’s baptism invalid because I mistakenly gave the priest the name of a Saint instead of my daughters ACTUAL name? 🤷

I think I heard that this is possible. I remember them saying you can choose one of the saints or just go by your own.

Her baptism is not invalid as long as the proper formula was spoken (I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit) and water was poured. Usually the name that’s used is the child’s legal name unless that name is offensive to the Church. That’s why some parishes request a birth certificate before they fill out the paperwork for a baptism.

these are what is needed for baptism from the CCC

1278 The essential rite of Baptism consists in immersing the candidate in water or pouring water on his head, while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

a baptism is invalid only if one or both those elements are missing
