In what year was the Baptist church start and in what year and who started it

Historians trace the earliest Baptist church back to 1609 in Amsterdam, with English Separatist John Smyth as its pastor.

Instead of depending on people from this website, why not do your own research. That way you can be a little more certain, have references, and even learn something you didn’t know. Just a suggestion.🙂

Here is a fairly well cited Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptists#Origins

Of course, Wikipedia isn’t the greatest but check out the cited works. They seem to confirm wmscott’s statement that historians trace the Baptist movement to 1609 and John Smyth.

Some Baptists would say AD 33 and it was started by Christ. They get this idea from a small pamplet of lectures by Dr. J.M. Carroll in the 1930’s. This pamplet was turned in a small book called the Trail of Blood.
Dr. Caroll claimed that the true Baptist Church has an unbroken chain of churches that go back to Christ. They were forced underground by the heretical Catholics.
