I do not know or expect that almost anyone on here will agree but here goes anyway. I do not believe that people like Irenaeus or many others were interested in presenting a fair and balanced perspective of differing groups. Take for example the Paulicians, for so long what we knew of this group was by their sworn opponents. When historian uncovered a Paulician text, the Key of Truth, all of sudden history has looked on them with a different lens. What you call heretical is based upon what people said about them. Their opponents. I do not believe they were presenting objective theological arguments.
Think about the mindset we are talking about here.
If this seems too far removed from reality, that people could so distort reality to their own perspective spend a little time now on the politicial blogs and read about Obama. One blog has him portrayed one way that is completely opposed to another blog…and this is 2008 when we have the internet and television.
What you loosely term heretical may not in fact be heretical.

Even though, there appears to be a greater movement from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism in recent times…there is still a much greater number leaving the Roman Catholic Church for biblical Christianity. It really doesn’t matter who leaves and who comes to a religous community. What matters is the truth as God reveals His authorative truth in the Scriptures alone to those who are being saved.

Snaps! I get it now…the reason “Catholics” can’t see what you do in the scriptures is because they are not being saved! This is why you have started so many “bible study” threads, you are trolling around looking for the elect, so you can lift them out of the trap of Catholicism.

Historical exegesis is not biblical exegesis. Do you consider recorded church history to be in par with Holy Scripture as divine revelation from above?

He did not suggest “historical exegesis” but actually opening your mind to explore history itself. The fact that recorded history is not inspired-inerrant does not make it useless…
