Baptists, HOW IS IT WRONG TO PRAY FOR THE DEAD?

if it is then i’m gonna burn forever because i pray for the dead in purgatory… & i pray to mary too because she’s my favorite saint & YES SHE CAN HELP YOU! My gosh, You should pray for the dead because it gets them out of purgatory & seriously HOW IS IT BAD TO PRAY FOR THE DEAD ? So, i’m going to burn forever right? because i pray to the dead to get their souls out of purgatory ? & i pray to mary because SHE CAN HELP YOU how can the mother OF JESUS NOT HELP YOU ? ugh Mary can help you… i’ve been on i guess Baptist sites & they’ve said “Catholics Worship Mary” WRONG! we pray to her because SHES OUR intercessor SHE HELPS US GET CLOSER TO God … You know how you have humans pray for you? WELL, we pray to the mother OF JESUS SHE was born with out Sin… Gosh, Why do you (Not all baptists) think we Worship Mary & saints ? we pray to them i pray to her to help me out & JESUS knows im asking him too i dont worship her, she’s my intercessor
 
As a former Baptist, maybe I can help on this. Baptists see nothing to gain by praying for the dead. They believe that believers go straight into Heaven at death and that unbelievers go straight to Hell. There is no concept of Purgatory or of any cleansing before the soul crossed into the presence of God. Our church saw the sins or the virtues displayed in life as having an effect on the believers’ rewards in Heaven, but not as having an effect at all on getting through the gates.

Marian prayer is seen as almost a form of substituting Mary for God. Many do suspect that we worship Mary.

They would never ask any dead person to pray for them, thinking that to be a waste of time. Baptists would pray directly to God only. Yes, some would argue that asking others to pray for someone is the same thing, but Baptists in our practice did not see it that way. I know many people felt the dead were beyond hearing our prayers, let alone praying to God to act on them. There were friendly debates on whether the dead had any knowledge of what was happening and the general belief was that they did not, because that would be the source of unhappiness.
 
gosh, man i’ve been praying to mary & she Has helped Me & she can help You too Why don’t you have statues or images just wondering? My mom says they dont believe in infant baptism my mom is Catholic convert, Left the baptist church to be catholic 🙂
 
oh my gosh i just got on a baptist site just to see they were blasphemous towards the CC i typed in catholics worship mary just to see how we worship Mary? We don’t we pray to her … they can’t even explain how we worship her … 😦 I know theres some baptists out there that know we dont worship mary
 
Have you read the Revelation? Because some of the verses there helps us, Catholic, like praying for the dead and invocations for the saints. I just forgot the Bible verses but I knew that there were if you just made every verses meaningful and if you attend to charismatic meetings and Bible studies. But i promise to come back if I’ve remembered one, I’ll just try to get back on reading the revelations.

Because they believe that God is a jealous God. and does not consult any apologist about that.

The zeal of youth is a contagious thing. 🙂

But you do need to make an attempt to understand others to be credible to them. When you effectively call them ignorant, dumb oafs it isn’t going to convince them.

Baptists have a largely judicial view of salvation and a critically undeveloped theology of sanctification. In Baptist theology, Jesus quite simply took the punishment for our sins and therefore we are free to enter heaven immediately upon death. Their view of judgement is limited to a mere penal sentence and Jesus took the sentence upon himself.

They don’t seem to notice that they still commit sins sometimes or wonder how heaven can be heaven if believers enter heaven without any sort of completed sanctification (they reject the notion of Purgatory). Those that do notice the continued tendency for believers to sin believe that it will be instantly removed between death and heaven, apparently not noticing that this would mean God violates their free will.

In short, if the Baptist view of sanctification were true, then they would be correct to admonish us not to pray for the dead, because there is no hope for those in hell and no need for prayers for those in heaven.

Their objection to prayer for the dead is a symptom, not the disease. Treat the disease - learn about Purgatory (from a reliable source).

In one reason is that there Bibles do not have the book of Maccabees. They’ll debate with you that the 7 books are not canonical and so on,which is entire different issue. If they choose not to pray to or for others,so be it! Does not make them less Christian.

Nicea325, I would have to disagree with you that it does not make them, for lack of a better term, less Christian. They are ignoring an obvious truth and command of the faith.
As Jesus states in Matthew 5:44-47
44 But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same?
47 And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same?

and later when Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:1-3
1 First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone,
2 for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity.
3 This is good and pleasing to God our savior,

Therefore if Jesus says it is to be done and God looks at it as something pleasing, then it is an essential part of faith in Christ Jesus. Also, in reference to the question of this forum, sorry to sidetrack but you can search this website and obtain numerous resources which will help you understand their theology in greater depth on the issue.

I understand what you are saying and I have no disagreements. However, tell that to staunch Baptists and it is not simply saying it but having them comprehend. 😉

To learn about Catholicism we need to talk to knowledgeable Catholics. To learn about the Baptists, we should talk directly to a learned Baptist. Every time I have gone to any individual church site, IF they talk about other churches, they invariably get wrong, misinform, or twist the doctrines of other groups/churches.

As a Latter-day Saint, I cannot tell you how disappointing some of the this forum’s edits are about my church and my beliefs. I almost feel dirty at times being here. I have had a few truly honest ecumenical interactions, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Remember the disappointment you felt when you read how your beliefs were twisted and commit never to do that to anther group. Instead, focus on the wonderful truths of the Catholic Church and share those with others.

I agree with you 100%. I certainly do not go around here or anyone parading or displaying the doctrines of other churches. I simply go to their church sources and read what they teach and believe. I certainly do not say such and such churches teach this without ever bothering to check, if what I say is true or not. And if I have done it here,then it is my mistake and owe others an apology.

Baptist are working with a service manual that is missing seven books!
1&2 Maccabees is not found in their bible which talks about praying for the dead.
They will sure ask you to pray for friend or family but the dead…?
Purgatory has a large role in the scheme of things for baptist also.
Your either in heaven or hell and thats all there is to it!
No need to waste anytime on the dead…🤷

i dont bash other religions because its wrong i judge nobody because who are we judge? guys, i gotta a question, i’ve been praying a novena to saint therese, & i saw a rose & its the 5th day, i dont know if im praying it right i saw a bunch of roses in my neighborhood that i’ve never seen before … i dont know if i’m praying it right but i saw roses, is this Good? after im done praying this one i’ll pray the other novena to saint therese

there my friend is the crux of the matter. i do not believe any one can comprehend these things, including mariology, prayers for the souls in purgatory, or the real presence without the Holy Spirit opening their eyes. all the biblical or historical evidence in the world will not be enough. as a baptist, i always felt strangly drawn to Catholics. and a pull towards the Church. wasnt till years later, and a lot of heartache, that i found out why. long story, wont bore you.lol! peace 🙂

You are so correct,conversion comes from the heart and it is a life-long process.No by all means,go ahead and tell me your journey to the RCC. I love hearing ex-Protestants stories…👍

I think that’s a fair point…although my understanding of Baptist theology is limited, I get the impression that beyond a certain point, their theology is not highly developed and that different Baptist ministers and their congregations have somewhat differing theologies on the fine points.

As well, on an internet forum, it’s very difficult to know who’s “learned” and who just sounds good. 😃

If we were never to judge anyone then how could there be morals? How could a murderer be wrong, how could a child molester be vilified? Do not take what the Bible says out of context. Judge not lest you be judged does not mean the actions of others. Jesus advises His disciples to live righteous lives so that their correction of others behavior will not be in vain. A couple of areas in the Bible you can look at are 1 Corinthians 2 and 1 Corinthians 6. Do not let the propaganda of the day tell you that judgment made upon others is always wrong. Now on to your next question, simply seeing roses does not constitute a miraculous happening, though in a way everything is a miracle. Perhaps you never noticed them before because you were not looking for them. This happens to me sometimes. With that said, God could also be communicating to you that He hears your prayers and is pleased by your devotion. Keep looking for God in your everyday life no matter if you’re praying a novena or not. God is always around us, sometimes you just have to stop and smell the roses.
