Just to say that in the US people who think that barefoot is casual and disrespectful have it very wrong. The nuns of the Poor Clare Sisters in Cleveland do live barefoothttp://media.cleveland.com/plain-dealer/photo/9143124-standard.jpgI wonder how much of this is tangled up culturally with the fact that while bare feet did symbolize humility on holy ground, here in the USA being barefoot is seen as casual and disrespectful.
Our priest and deacons were in stocking feet for their prostration and when they venerated the cross, but otherwise I couldn’t see their feet to know how long they were barefoot.
