Liberal secularists like to view the Battle of Lepanto as barbaric resulting in some 30,000 Turkish deaths. It was a necessary fight. After the crusades, it was always the Turks who were threatening the West (not vice versa). Yes, you live by the sword, you die by the sword. And if something is worth dying for, it’s worth killing for. Jesus’ warning to his followers was not to make them afraid to pick up a weapon, but to make sure they understood that anyone who does so becomes subject to the retributions of war and the odds and the gods of the blood feud. But if it’s worth it…If the Turks are headed your way, I don’t see why Christians are obligated to “turn the other cheek” of their children and their wives.

Fast forward to today, the most of West has become weak and liberalized except for one evil empire. That is the United States, the defender of the western world. Islamic dreamers think they could dominate and convert the world without resistance. That is probably the rationale behind 9/11. The precedent of Mogadishu was that America will run if deaths occur. Not true of the Bush Administration. Al Quiada was expecting America to leave the Middle East and what they got was Third Army in Iraq and Special Forces in Afghanistan. Historically Operation Iraqi Freedom may go down in history somewhat equivalent to Lepanto. Lepanto destroyed the ability of the Caliphate to rule the Med on the seas. It would take two battles of Vienna and many lesser battles including those of World War One to destroy the calipahate.

Operation Iraqi Freedom by itself may not destroy Islam but it has shown that when vital interests of the United States and indeed the modern world are at stake, America can and will take decisive action as necessary. The rule sets have changed. Societies that refuse to abide will at best be ignored and left to implode or destroyed if they threaten the modern world.
Like *Father Jospeh Fessio said, “*I believe without being…you know, having hubris as an American, I believe that Christians in the United States are the ones who will be able to save not just Christianity, but Western civilization…”

MugenOne,

When I read your post I could not help but think about the Second World War. The Axis powers thought America was weak with no will to fight and our army of democracy no challenge to their highly motivated fanatics. They were wrong. Anyone how thinks they can intimated the United States would be wise to read the prophetic words of Imperial Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto who on December 7, 1941 said “I fear that we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve.”

Peace,

George

the biggest difference is the fact that the battle of lepanto was in self defense. as far as i know, the iraqi or any other muslim navy wasn’t off the east coast of new jersey, or any other u.s. coast. 2nd, we are fighting terrorists and not an sovergn country like the ottoman empire. finally, the battle of lepanto had the popes support and encouragement. the victory was attributed to the pope’s urging of the catholic faithful to pray the rosary during the battle. i didn’t see B16 urging catholics world wide to pray the rosary so the united states forces will be victorious in iraq. B16 and JPII if anything have spoken against going to war because it didn’t qualify -in their opinions, as a just war.
I believe that Christians in the United States are the ones who will be able to save not just Christianity, but Western civilization…"
if it is up to the united states to save christendom- a country which murdered 42 million babies, i’m not going to feel too optomistic. but i am confident that God will save his church in the end despite what we manage to skrew up down here.

right, you cannot expect God to use the US since the US is an abortion country right now. If God plans to use the US to become His instrument to the whole world, He would punish it first for their SINS so that they would be cleanse.

Moreover, I think God would use a humble country than a proud one just like the US. He could use good Catholic countries like Philippines and the Mexico to humble the proud countires of this world
