Liberal secularists like to view the Battle of Lepanto as barbaric resulting in some 30,000 Turkish deaths. It was a necessary fight. After the crusades, it was always the Turks who were threatening the West (not vice versa). Yes, you live by the sword, you die by the sword. And if something is worth dying for, it’s worth killing for. Jesus’ warning to his followers was not to make them afraid to pick up a weapon, but to make sure they understood that anyone who does so becomes subject to the retributions of war and the odds and the gods of the blood feud. But if it’s worth it…If the Turks are headed your way, I don’t see why Christians are obligated to “turn the other cheek” of their children and their wives.
Fast forward to today, the most of West has become weak and liberalized except for one evil empire. That is the United States, the defender of the western world. Islamic dreamers think they could dominate and convert the world without resistance. That is probably the rationale behind 9/11. The precedent of Mogadishu was that America will run if deaths occur. Not true of the Bush Administration. Al Quiada was expecting America to leave the Middle East and what they got was Third Army in Iraq and Special Forces in Afghanistan. Historically Operation Iraqi Freedom may go down in history somewhat equivalent to Lepanto. Lepanto destroyed the ability of the Caliphate to rule the Med on the seas. It would take two battles of Vienna and many lesser battles including those of World War One to destroy the calipahate.
Operation Iraqi Freedom by itself may not destroy Islam but it has shown that when vital interests of the United States and indeed the modern world are at stake, America can and will take decisive action as necessary. The rule sets have changed. Societies that refuse to abide will at best be ignored and left to implode or destroyed if they threaten the modern world.
