They (the Benedictines attached to the Basilica) also run a food pantry and sometimes emergency funds for electrical bills and stuff for persons in crisis.

It is good they are looking after the needs of the community. I haven’t been to that part of Des Moines in several years, but as I recall the Basilica was either in an impoverished neighborhood or on the edge of one.

I do not know for sure. The entire liturgy is spoken in Latin. The homily is in English. If I remember correctly Monsignor Chiodo faces the people in the pew, it is not with his back to us.

Yes they are in a poor neighborhood just a little bit East of Drake University on what used to be known as Harding Road. I’ve had a family member take advantage of their charity. It made such an impression that there may be a conversion of the heart and soul!

Saint Anthony’s Parish has a very reverent OF Mass which is in English and also celebrates the EF Mass downstairs on Sundays. Though it is my understanding that the EF is also celebrated upstairs in the main Church on certain Holy Days.
