WWW.msjroscrea.ie is the most beautiful monastery that I have been in my whole life and I have finally decided to join. They are recently looking for new novices or people to join as the place is huge and the numbers are small. It is a very relaxed monastery as they do speak now and the food is incredible and the work isn’t so much now.

If you are thinking about vocations, maybe the monastic life is the one for you.

You are welcome to come for a visit or simple retreat to see the place or simple see if it is something that would suit you.

God bless
👍

This is a bit of history, but I see Mount St. Joseph Abbey was a foundation of Mount Melleray. So was our local Cistercian monastery - New Melleray Abbey. Those monks of Mount Melleray must have seeded the world!

dust and ashes, God bless you and guide you in your vocation. 🙂

The motto of the order is that work is prayer. So rather than manual labor all day, the monks work at praying all day.

it really makes a person feel wonderful.

First off, it’s good to see others discerning a monastic vocation. Have you formally applied yet? I find it hard to believe that anybody following the Rule of St. Benedict doesn’t partake in manual labor, because as St.Benedict said, work and pray (ora et labora). God bless you in your discernment!

I just checked out the website and the order looks amazing. If I felt I was called to a monastic vocation instead of the ordained priesthood, this order would definitely be at the top of my list.
When exactly are you joining the order?

I am glad that you like it. I have only been here three weeks and I have definitely made my mind that this is the place. Everyone I have spoke to in the guesthouse who have come over the years have said this is the nicest monastery they have been and thats the reason they keep returning. The songs are so beautiful in the prayers that you almost want to cry. Its not like we pray all day. we do work also. Most of the monks are priests in the monastery, down the line it can be a possibility that they might ask you if you want to be a priest also. Already they are wanting to send me on some course or other to more fully discern this is the right path for me. But if this place isnt heaven on earth, i dont know where is!!

Reading between the lines it sounds like this is just another monastic group having a vocation crisis? Am I right? If so i don’t think not a lot of work and good food are the answer. JMHO.

A person works hardest at what they are happiest doing! Therefore one who is happiest with money works all day at whatever worldly job they have.

The one who is happiest with God does less worldly work but works more fervently at praying and doing the things of God.

St Paul said to pray constantly. He also said the one who isnt married seeks how he may only please the Lord.

“Nothing can seperate us from the Love us Christ”

"a man is known through what he loves"st Thomas Aquinas

Well, I do think that the original post did sound a little funny–and was also funny!

BUT …there’s nothing wrong with good food, especially if it’s locally grown and prepared on site, which I suspect is the case, and that the monks have tailored their work to their numbers and aren’t overwhelmed, as many groups have been in the past.

This particular order maintains the austere Cistercian horarium, rising at 4 AM–doesn’t sound too soft to me!

Almost all religious orders around the world, no matter how orthodox, are in trouble. There are a few groups, especially new ones, which are attracting vocations, but…time will tell.

The Carthusians, the most austere order in the church, are down to under 400 members, more like 350, with a high average age.

Yes , it is true that it isnt as hard as it used to be. Before vatican 2 it was really hard.Monks had to wake up at 2 am and work all day between prayers finishing at 7 pm. Werent allowed to go home if family died or any breaks.werent allowed to speak either. I met one of the monks who had a nervous break down 50 years ago because of the hard lifestyle.

Now its all changed, wake up at 4 am and food is better, allowed to speak, ect…
