Oh I always knew that - you just need to compare your padded-and-protected-up-the-wazoo football players to our Aussie Rules or Rugby boys.
I’m of Irish descent, dear, so I almost believe in rugby.

Cheers on that one -
I use to rip on the football nuts where I worked about that. 😃

Hello all. I have an unusual question. Many of the Catholic churches around where I live host Beef and Beer fundraisers for families in need of help, and I have even seen published in our parishes bulletin that there “will be various beers available” at the function. As a Protestant and having gone to a Protestant church all my life, a church sponsored Beef and Beer fundraiser would NEVER happen. Personally, I don’t think drinking beer is a sin, but it just seems really odd a church would sponsor such an event. Is this kind of fundraiser common in Catholic Churches?
**Actually, both Catholic schools and parishes throughout the world hold various fundraisers to supplement their monetary needs. Many parishes hold picnics, carnivals, “beef & beer” events, even “Las Vegas Nights”; not to mention I know some parishes that sponsored fashion shows, even craft shows.

Personally, I do not see anything wrong with such fundraising, and the people know that the money is going to their own parish.
However, I DO have a major problem with any parish which might accept money from drug dealers or gangsters (such as the Mafia or similar organized crime outfit). “Looking the other way” doesn’t cut it in my book. A lot of that money has come from substances that have destroyed the lives of many people, even to the point of murder. The parish needs to be vigilant in this regard, and reject such monetary supplements.**

Out of interest does that happen much? Never heard of it, but the mafia’s quite small in my country

It is really sad since we converted to Catholicism. At least in the evangelical Protestant church, almost everyone else abstained, and so we had a lot of friends and often got together for dinners, picnics, or just going out for a Coke or ice cream with church pals. Now all those church pals don’t associate with “Catholics” like us. But many of the Catholics that we know consider a social “unsociable” if there is no liquor.

So we are alone a lot. It’s really fun to live in this beautiful Catholic castle and wander around alone, but to be honest, we won’t change our abstinent ways. I would rather be alone than associate with those who label me “Protestant” because I choose not to use the drug of alcohol.

I guess that’s why there’s an Internet, right?
👍👍👍👍👍👍

This is exactly why I’ve had doubts and feel out of place in the Catholic church. Not just a tolerance of alcohol, that I can handle, but an outright promotion of alcohol. Where I live, in a very Catholic area, our church, and just about every other Catholic church in the area, has festivals in the summer which are basically big keggers…the main attraction is the “beer tent.” Being raised in a Protestant church, there was no alcohol at church functions, even though it was not a “fundamentalist” or very strict denomination. Also, the church-sponsored gambling in the Catholic church is something that puts me off and comes off as unChristian. We settled on a Catholic church to raise our kids, since my wife is Catholic, and I was at least partly raised Catholic (Protestant mother and Catholic non-practicing father). I would honestly probably rather a Protestant church at this point, but the problem is, in my area, it seems the only really active Protestant churches are the evangelical Baptist and “nondenominational” churches…which I’m not sure I want to get into.

My concern (IF worth being dually noted):

Going to Catholic festivals I have found beer to be an attractant to the public (non-church goers). While I believe in having alcolhol at fellowshipping events (i.e. weddings, gatherings)t, it is wise to keep it at fellowshipping not as a means to community attraction. My impression of the message being presented by our many “Saints”? “Come to our festival, pay to drink and be marry (so we can give money to OUR school) but don’t hold us accountable if you are an alcoholic and we are presenting it publicly under the name of God and religion.” From an organization that believes abortion will damn you to hell, it is contradicting to provide cheap beer to those most suseptable to sex, drugs and rock&roll. Last festvial I went to (and the last I will ever go to) there were several drunken “public” pedestrians rocking out to “Love the One Your With”. Drinking in fellowship is just that - everyone knows eachother, giving you freedom to confront your fellow Catholic if you find an issue in their behavior. So why provide such an atmosphere to the public? Is gambling at these events not enough income to provide white crosses for your church yards to symbolize the death of our unborn? Most of which are results of the addicts and alcoholics in our society?

Just a thought. . .
