Not sure if this is the correct forum, if not I apologize and the moderators may move it.

Anyways, I start my RCIA on the 27th of this month, and I was wondering about the Sponsor. I’m am a former Mormon, I have no Catholic Relatives locally, except for my dad who is very inactive. I also have really no acquaintances at our local parish so i don’t know who to ask. Would I be assigned a sponsor?

If you don’t have someone that you can ask, most Parishes have people who will volunteer to be one. They are not actually assigned as it is best for you and the sponsor to mutually make the choice.

First of all, I wish you many blessings on your journey!

Don’t worry about a sponsor at this stage, it is very early in the process and you will get to know people as you go along. When I started in RCIA, I also didn’t know anyone, but within a few weeks I had been introduced to parishioners and made friends.

You will soon get to know people, especially as you attend Mass (this is very important, even if you can’t yet receive Holy Communion). I went to Mass as often as I could, and everyone was very friendly.

Of course if you can’t think of anyone who could be your sponsor, your RCIA director might suggest someone, but the decision would be yours. It just has to be a Catholic in good standing.

I can speak for our parish.

Yes, you would. My husband is a layman, and for the last few years, he has accepted the responsibility of procuring sponsors for people like yourself who are going through RCIA and don’t have any close Catholic friends or relatives.

My husband also helps the sponsors to do a good job of it. They are supposed to spend time with the person they are sponsoring, get to know them (as much as the person wants to be known), and help them to make friends and feel comfortable and welcome in the parish.

For example, the sponsors are supposed to make sure that you know where the Perpetual Adoration Chapel is, and they are supposed to take you in there for a visit or a whole Holy Hour, if you wish.

The sponsors in our parish are great Catholic people who love helping others to know and love Jesus and His Church better. Many of them have sponsored many RCIAers into the Church and feel comfortable doing this.

I love my sponsor, a woman who converted to Catholicism a few years before I did. She was sweet and very supportive of me.

May God bless you as you go through RCIA. As you can see from my sig, my RCIA Class ROCKED!

I attend mass every week, I just feel at home when I’m there, thank you all for your helpful advice.👍
