The New Evangelization will not occur if only Catholics are friends with Catholics.
By talking with someone else, your friend will not equate ProLife with the random Huffington Post News story.

I have friends who are atheists, Jews, Muslims, every stripe of Christian. Friends across the political spectrum.

My life is made better because of my friends, we respect each other.

Definitely! As long as they aren’t pressuring you to sin hard, I don;t see the harm in a disagreement.

Right. Part of being a Catholic in the world is showing the world that a person can pray, go to Mass regularly, and do their best to follow Church teaching and live a Godly life without being some weirdo. Those of us who grew up in Catholic areas already know this because we saw Catholics all over the spectrum and most of them were just normal grandmas and dads and aunts etc, but a lot of people nowadays are growing up without much exposure to religion and/or without much exposure to Catholics.

There is a trend these days to equate religious people with brainwashed nutjobs, bigots, social misfits who live on some compound in the woods with all the females in sack dresses and nobody ever watching TV, a movie, going on the Internet, getting a college education etc.

When others see that a person can live a full life, enjoy beer and ball games and the beach and everything else in moderation, doesn’t look or act like they have been living in an isolated hut for 30 years and is well educated, AND is religious on top of that, it challenges the stereotype that the media constantly pushes.

I would say there are different degrees of “pro choice” and whether or not you can be friends with someone depends on just how pro choice they are. Many–probably most-- ordinary people who claim to be pro choice would not have an abortion themselves and would not recommend it for anyone else, but for various reasons, they do not believe it should be entirely illegal. They may be willing to accept limits on how far into pregnancies abortion should be allowed, etc. I would not have a problem with a “soft” pro choice person like this. But a “hard” or aggressive pro choicer who insists that abortion must be legal without any limits up to birth, that it should be paid for by taxpayers, that it’s something to be proud of or to be recommended as a good thing–that kind of person would rub me so much the wrong way that I could not consider them a friend or confidant (though I would be courteous and civil to them).

I don’t think there is anything in Chirch teaching or in the Bible that would prevent you from being friends. I mean being friends, you may change her heart and mind.😉

There are also different degrees of friendship. At my age, I mostly want friends for casual social get-togethers. I don’t need to know where people stand on every political issue of the day to go out to a show or a ball game with them, where we’re going to be spending the evening enjoying the performance or cheering for the team, not having deep conversation about abortion, immigration, etc.
I left all that “deep conversation” stuff back in college where it belongs.

She has her opinions, you have yours.
It would be a shame to stop a friendship because of that, right ?
Personally, I tend to pick my friends based on their mobile OS. Android users are great. Windows users are weird but fun to have around. Blackberry users are too old-fashioned. Flip phone users are even more old-fashioned but in a charming, eccentric way. iOS users, though…Those people can’t be trusted!

No, its unjust discrimination to determine friendship based on phone choice. That said, people who wear sweatpants must be avoided as a matter of course.

I would say, “I’m going to see this movie called ‘Unplanned.’ Want to join me?”

ETA: and I would be sure to make sure I could have a good discussion afterwards! There are several good back-and-forth threads on abortion here at CAF to read if you feel unsure about being able to discuss the issue.

I love this reply. Grew up where the only practicing Christians were non Doms were young earthers or didn’t believe in listening to any secular music or going to the movies in case it was a ‘bad witness’
