Hi there. I was at a benedictine abbey recently and the Mother Abbess accepted a new oblate into the community. They signed a certificate, the Oblate swore to live her life to benedict’s rule and they hugged. However afterwards the Abbess said “Let us pray for our sister.” The Oblate knelt and the Abbess imposed hands upon her. I was just wondering whether this was an old practise or an innovation, perhaps maybe slightly scandalous given the fact that it resembled (even slightly) Holy Orders.
