Is being a benign Roman Catholic a bad thing? By this, I am not referring to lapsed Catholicism, more so in the fact that I don’t preach the faith and simply practice the faith on my own time. Even then, I am not heavily religious, nor have I ever been. I just follow the doctrines I know of, search for more, and then do my best to follow those. Even then, I tend to teeter sometimes between Roman Catholicism and atheism, but the point of my question is this: Is it wrong to not be heavily devoted to the Roman Catholic faith?

If you get up every morning and offer to God all your joys, sorrows, and sufferings for the conversion of sinners and to repair for your own sins, you can impact the world for good. It’s like the boy who gives Christ a few loaves and fish and Christ feeds the 5,000.

If you aren’t really interested in that, which is a small action on our part and not at all difficult, how do you think it will work out for you at the end when you give an account for your life? Matt 25:14-30 tells us about the parable of the talents.

Are you doing a morning offering? You might be doing more than you imagine, only because God is generous with us all. The idea of giving an account at the end of our lives is very unsettling. God bless you.

Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

No, it’s more so I’m a Catholic one moment and an atheist the next.

I can’t really close my door, unfortunately, so I’ll go to another room instead.

It’s a hard question to answer in terms of is it wrong or not. To me it sounds more unfulfilling than wrong. Faith is not only about the drudge of following rules. It is being nourished by the hope of eternal life and happiness in heaven. It’s about the familial bond with the whole Communion of Saints. Faith inspires courage and openness to being a channel of Christs love to others without having to even ‘preach’.

If you struggle with belief, Scripture gives a response in the verse about the father of a boy possessing an unclean spirit. (Mark 9 23) “I believe; help my unbelief!”. Ask and you shall receive.

So preaching and ministry isn’t a necessity? I would go into that if God commanded me to, and I have no problems currently with taking up my cross to follow Christ, but otherwise I can be a pious parishioner, not a parish priest.

No, formal preaching is not a necessity. There are orders of religious that have no contact with others. Their vocation is to pray and fast for the world. We must teach our children of course and otherwise as 1 Peter 3 instructs “Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; 16 yet do it with gentleness and reverence.”

The way we live is a fantastic means of evangelising. Be a living witness.

So basically be like Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916) and live a pious Catholic lifestyle.

Well he wasn’t the best monarch, but he was a very good Catholic.
