Howdy, a friend of mine is interested in becoming more submersed in faith and needs a bit of his push. His family is not very religious, but he would like to become more religious. He mentioned he wanted to get a Bible so I was thinking I should get him one and possibly a scapular. Any recommendations for an Catholic who would like to go deeper into faith? I’ve thought about the NRSV one from Catholic Bible Press, Word on Fire, and Catholic Adventure Bible. Tell me which you think is the best as well as any other advice in helping him grow in faith! God bless our brother

I got that book for my first holy communion!
It is a great guide for adults and children alike.

I would recommend that whatever Bible you get for him, you get it from a Catholic book store, make sure it’s returnable and have the receipt for it, so that if the Bible does not suit him when he gets it, he can take it back and choose a Catholic Bible that better suits him. It can be hard to pick out the type of Bible that would appeal to someone else.

Also, I’m not sure if I would give him a scapular yet, if he is just starting to get more religious. Brown scapulars should really only be worn by people who are planning to practice the basics of Carmelite spirituality. It doesn’t sound like your friend is quite “there” yet. I would suggest maybe a nice medal of his favorite saint instead. If he doesn’t yet have a favorite saint, the Miraculous Medal of Mary, or a medal of the Sacred Heart if he’d prefer Jesus, are good choices. You could perhaps give him a green Scapular, which is designed to help with the conversion of people, but it is typically not worn by the person who receives the benefit of it.

Any Bible that’s easy to understand and is approved by the Church with an “imprimatur” mark on it is good.

Hint: KJV is definitely NOT a good version.

I would highly recommend the Great Adventure Bible. Especially if he doesn’t understand much about the covenants and how the Church is the fulfillment of them.

This Bible is great at connecting all those dots and shows you how each of the books should be read in order to see how the history of our salvation unfolded.
