Best book on apologetics

Hello all and Happy New Year. Looking for (name removed by moderator)ut as to which of the apologetic books out there are considered “best”. I realize this is a subjective question but the synopsis of every one I have looked at all read the same. I would like some user (name removed by moderator)ut as to which ones are really broad based and cover most of the information i would need to defend the Faith from unbelievers, and protestant detractors/evangilizers. I can hold my own on catechism discussions but not so much on discussions regarding the Scriptual basis of our Doctrines and trying to refute false teachings from protestants. I apprieciate all help. Thank you.
 
The Catholic Controversy by St. Francis de Sales.

Quite frankly, the best apologetics book I’ve ever read.

I’m sure others will give many other very valid suggestions, but I suggest this book to everyone no matter their faith level.

I agree, Catholic Controversy’s by St. Francis de Sales is pretty darn good.
I would also recommend Nuts and Bolts by Jimmy Akin (I think) and A Biblical Defense of Catholicism by Dave Armstrong.

The St. Francis de Sales book might be a little hard to find. Try you local Catholic bookstore first and see if they can order it for you (support you local bookstore) and if they don’t carry it I think the publisher is TAN books and you can probably order it off their website.

Some other suggestions would be to read prominent converts books like David Currie’s Born Fundamentalist and Born again Catholic or Steve Ray’s books. They do a good job of outlining their thought processes on their conversions and provide a lot of biblical evidence for their change of opinions and conversion.

I found my copy of Catholic Controversy on Amazon for $12, its the first book I read when trying to get deeper into my faith and haven’t looked back. Its simply amazing, althought I do agree, one should support the local Catholic bookstore 🙂

I stand corrected then. 🙂 Maybe it was just hard for me to find. 😊 Although I did end up finding it at my local catholic bookstore in the used section for $1. That was definately a score.

If you intend to do this, then I would recommend that you go to the old posts right here on CAF. They will present both sides in a discussion and the progression of those ideas which is also an important part of understanding arguments. They may also be sorted by “the most viewed” order which also tells you which topics are the hot ones everyone likes and wants to get into. You can do this on all sorts of topics and allows the choice of the best answers on any given subject. Try it once and you’ll see what I mean. Greater than any book or books for training and understanding. Just a wealth of knowledge contained here.

Also become very familiar with the New Testiment. Not chapter verse, but what it says.
Once known, it can be paraphrased and it also equips you with the truth. St. Paul’s letters especially are a gold mine of thought. Each time I read him, I am amazed at what I missed in my first reading, and learn something that I over looked before.

Just a few thoughts.
 
Thanks to all. many great ideas. And thanks to Fred, I have been doing just as you suggested and there are some really good discusions here.
 
If you want a book to answer detractors, there is a specific book in that area.
