Best Days in the whole year

These are our best days in the whole year:
Holy Thursday when we celebrate the Lord’s Last Supper;
Good Friday when we remember the Lord’s Passion and Cross;
and Holy Saturday when we celebrate Resurrection.

I wouldn’t say that they are the “best” days, but Holy Week is indeed the highest point in the Church’s liturgical calendar.

I don’t know about the whole year, however, a priest whom I trust wholeheadedly has said that Lent is all about the Holy Triduum. “If you are not going to celebrate the Triduum,” he says, “there is no point in doing Lent.”

I am getting super excited for these holiest of days, and for me personally, the stretch from Holy Thursday through the Easter Octave is The. Best. Time. Ever.

That’s the way I talk, though – Best. Ever. (pronounced “evuh”)

But when I’m talking to people outside my immediate circle of church friends, I don’t say they’re the best day in the year. I call them the holiest days.

They are indeed the holiest days in the year. According to the Table of Liturgical Days, the Easter triduum has the top spot in the year! Those three days rank higher in importance than every other day in the Church year.

I wish more people participated in the triduum. Although we usually have a packed church, because there’s only one service each day, there are so many people I talk with who never go to Holy Thursday mass, or the main Good Friday service, or have never been to Easter Vigil - and don’t even know that it’s not just another Saturday night mass! “What do you mean, Father lit a bonfire?”

I was having a discussion with a deacon this morning about Holy Week. We agreed that Holy Week is one of the most exciting times in the Church year. It’s very tiring for those who are active in their parishes, but it is totally worth it. I love all the Holy Week liturgies. Holy Thursday is one of my favorites, in my opinion. I like the Easter Vigil, but I love Easter Sunday when the church is packed, and we open with the triumphal “Jesus Christ is Risen Today”. I look forward to it every year!

Well said! One good reason to attend the Triduum liturgies

Indeed. Since the Paschal Triduum falls always during the summer vacation in the Philippines (and are holidays for the first two days) I consider it the BIGGEST and HIGHEST point of my summer.

Correction: Holy Saturday- we mourn Christ’s Death and await his resurrection

I used to never attend the Easter vigil, but last year did for the first time at our Parish. It was breathtaking. From the fire outside, to the candles being lit one by one from that fire, to the procession into the church, being in total darkness for a while… then poof! All lights turn on in the church and the songs of triumph ring from the choir loft with the gorgeous choir praising that the Lord has risen. It is beautiful! Even more so this year as my wife gets welcomed into the Catholic church during this same Mass!
