The parish I am interning is planning on having a parish book club which will start by reading the Confessions of St. Augustine. What would be the best edition of the Confessions to read? I am thinking in terms of the most readable translation and the most helpful commentary and notes.

I hope someone can answer your question because I’d like to know too. One I would NOT recommend is published by Barnes and Noble, translated by E.B Pusey. I eventually gave up struggling to read it because it was so difficult, and I think the problem was the translation not me. I’d like to find a better edition. But, the edition I have does look lovely on my bookshelf.

Dunno about best, but a well-thumbed, well-loved copy of F.J. Sheed’s translation graces my nightstand. It’s quite a readable, even beautiful, translation, but has no notes, only a list of Biblical citations.

The best one I remember seeing was in university. It had a split page with english on one side and latin on the other. Wish I remembered what publication it was.
