The Most Holy Eucharist. The Real Presence of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ in the Eucharist is the most beautiful and sacred thing on Earth.

Read the Gospel of John, chapter six; this will explain why the Eucharist the vitally important.

When they fail us, of course it’s bad and of course no one should have been abused, but it has little to do with them being Catholic clergy. Protestant clergy have abused people too. That being Catholic means you are part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. And that no matter what anyone says, that fact can’t be refuted. Without Catholicism, there would never be any Protestantism, a fact that Protestants don’t seem to recognize.

As an ex-agnostic, one of the things I like the most about Catholicism is that it’s rational. It is not opposed to science, but sees that when it is practiced correctly it is just another way that God reveals to us his creation through his Logos. Faith and Reason go together. I also like how everything in Catholicism can through Scripture and Tradition be traced back to the time of - or deduced from the teachings of - the Apostles.

But the single best thing about Catholicism? The Sacraments. Hearing the priest say, with the full authority of Christ, “I absolve you of your sins.” Actually kneeling down and receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ Himself. Knowing that He loved you enough to sacrifice his life for you so that you might have everlasting life and gives himself to you as food in the Eucharist.

Hi Chuck1,

For me, there are two “best things” about being a Catholic:
  • receiving the real presence of God in the Eucharist
  • the Catholic Church is truly universal, (indeed “Catholic” means universal), unlike other denominations which are often strongly associated with specific places or nations only. I love to see all the many different peoples who are part of our Church. In our congregation there are europeans (mainly Scots, English, Irish, Polish and Italian), Asians (India / subcontinent), Africans, Chinese - it beautifully shows the great diversity and yet great unity of Catholicism. For me, it is a very special thing to see people of all races and cultures come together as one community, to worship God through our Catholicism.
If it is of interest for you, a Catholic guy (nice fella) I know used to be a protestant minister. He used to think Catholics were seriously misguided and had to be rescued from the clutches of the Pope etc (!). I once asked why he converted and he said it was the real presence in the Eucharist which ultimately got him.

He said he used to spend lots of time, when still a minister, reading about Catholic doctrine and concepts - looking for supposed flaws, as ammunition to try to convert Catholics with. But his plan backfired and he ended up converting himself to Catholicism instead. D’oh! He says his conversion is a great example of God’s sense of humour.

Oh, I forgot about “devout” - for me, it means someone who takes their faith seriously and really tries to live their faith. I.e. they are not Catholic just for an hour on a Sunday, they are Catholic always.

I see you are in the UK, like me: you will notice in the UK, people always feel it necessary to put an adjective in front of the word Catholic.

For example, devout catholic, lapsed catholic, guilty catholic, strict catholic etc. No one is just a “catholic” seemingly.

It shows what a stereotypical view people in Britain have of Catholicism - the media are especially guilty (no pun intended!) of it.
 
Well basicaly for the same reasons of all the post so far and problably more to come. I love the feeling of the presence of God everytime I’m in a catholic church. You know the more I think about it the longer my list gets. So, I like everything about being a catholic.

The Eucharist!!
The ability to receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ every day is just a privilege that is simply immeasurable!
