Here’s a thread, maybe one day a sticky, in which people can post links to what they think are exceptional free on-line videos of traditional Catholic or Orthodox liturgies. By “exceptional” I mean videos which are of a high video and audio quality and which can serve to introduce people to, possibly instruct them in, the traditional public worship of the Catholic Church, particularly the Latin (Roman) Church.

One more thing before I post links to what I think are worthy videos – some such videos are undoubtedly going to come from sources which “have a beef” with the main body of the Latin Church regarding her modern rites, e.g. the SSPX. It seems to me that we can still value those videos inasmuch as they help us to better appreciate the “classical rites vs. modern rites” debate, and also as they can be moving displays of the love for God certain persons and groups have whom some Catholics might otherwise be tempted to think of as the “enemy other.”

Here are my picks so far:

**Traditional (Tridentine) Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary
(alternate host)

Tridentine Missa Cantata (Sung Latin Mass) for the Last Sunday after Pentecost
(alternate host)

Traditional Latin Mass: Feast of the Sacred Heart
(alternate host - same video but lower quality encoding)

Traditional Latin Catholic Mass with narration by then Mgr. Fulton Sheen

Traditional Latin Low Mass with voice-over meditation from the writings of St. Peter Julian Eymard
(alternate host)**

And here’s an awesome video of a great, whopping, nearly 3 hours long, incredibly beautiful, ornate (and almost by definition traditional) Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, which Pope Benedict XVI recently attended:

Divine Liturgy in Honor of the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, celebrated on November 30, 2006

What other videos deserve mention? 😃

Oh, those interested in following along with the Latin prayers in the TLM videos and who don’t own a Latin-English hand-missal may find the following webpage to be helpful:

An English Translation of the Ordinary of the 1962 Missale Romanum

IDEA: Put the browser window in which the video is displayed on the right side of your screen, and then put a browser window loaded with the above webpage on the left side of you screen. That will allow you to follow along quite easily! 🙂

Here is a Mass celebrated by the SSPX, it is the Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I like this one because the camera gets nice and close to the priest so you can hear what he is saying, even during the canon. It also gives many side views of the altar.

Six parts.

Edit: Oops. Appears you already posted this one. Haha. Oh well, different website I suppose. 😛

Here is a short clip of aSarum Rite Mass. This was a Rite common in medieval England until the English Reformation. Just as a side note, I am not sure if this clip is of a Catholic Mass, or if it is of Anglicans using the Sarum Rite. But interesting clip nonetheless.

Here are two short clips of a Mozarabic Rite Mass. After Vatican II this rite was modernized, so it now has vernacular in it. Also, the chant you hear is more Gregorian-style rather then the original Mozarabic chant.

Mozarabic Mass Two

Great Video!!!

Oh, how I WISH the coronation would be brought back!
It is left to the judgement of any new Pope whether they wish to have a coronation or not. In fact, Paul VI explicitly said that future Popes be crowned, even though he only wore his once, but then John Paul I decided to have an Installation of the Pallium instead, and John Paul II said that he would not have a joyous coronation while the Church was still in mourning for John Paul I.

Just my opinion, but the Holy Father is no longer a temporal ruler competing with other European rulers. The Holy Father is the Servant of the servants of God and I don’t think we’ll ever see another coronation. And, I have to say, that I believe this is for the best. In this, I am not so traditonal.

But He [note capital H] is also the Vicar of Christ. He is also the Sovereign Pontiff and Regent of the Church.

He still has Vatican City, but who cares if He’s lost land? The coronation was marvellous, and like a load of other things, it’s a great shame it was dropped.

What was Pope Benedict XVI’s reason for no coronation? By the way, I loved that video. Since only JPI, JPII and Benedict XVI have been elected Pope in my lifetime, I never saw a coronation of a Pope before I saw your video.

Benedict XVI probably didnt have a coronation for no other reason then His predecessor didnt have one. Also, it probably wouldnt have been portrayed well in the media.

And can we please give bring back the Agnus Dei Sacramentals, please?
