I am a Permanent Deacon and I have been asked to confer a Betrothal Blessing. Does anyone know of a format for such a blessing? Any suggestions?

Ooohhhhhhhh…betrothal! I really need to get off and get some sleep…lol…when I first read this…I thought it said brothel blessing!!:bigyikes: :o

Well sure.

Book of Blessings, Part I, Chapter I, Order VI. Order for the Blessing of an Engaged Couple.

This should be in the shorter version.

As a deacon, if you don’t have it, get the book as something that you must have. (The Church does expect us to know these things.) It’s only about $20 from Catholic Book Publishing.

But you can also find this blessing at catholicculture.org/lit/prayers/view.cfm?id=704 . I double checked it against my text

It would be nice if you could give this Blessing at a daily Mass. A Christ/Eucharist centered life is our only hope for a successful marriage.

As the quote below from the Book Blessings specifies, the blessing is not to be combined with the celebration of Mass. I suppose the reason is so that the betrothal does not appear to be a form of the sacrament of matrimony itself, which might confuse the couple and others about the nature of their obligations. Engagement is like a novitiate period for marriage, a period of testing before the irrevocable commitment.

And yes, Deacon John, I will purchase a Book of Blessings. Thanks for your help,

*197 The present order may be used by the parents, a priest, a deacon, or a lay minister. While maintaining the structure and chief elements of the rite, the minister should adapt the celebration to the circumstances of the place and the people involved.

198 The present order may also be celebrated during the engagement period on an occasion when couples are brought together for premarital instruction. Neither a formal betrothal nor the special blessing of an engaged couple is ever to be combined with the celebration of Mass.*

DBill-I have the book, but did not look at it. Thanks for the info about not including it in the Mass. If I do one of these, I will wait until after Mass.
