Beware of These Books: Conversations with God

Conversations with God.

Dr. James Dobson talked about this book twice this week. It is devastating and parents and Christian schools need to be aware of this. Do pass it on to church/ e-mail addressees. Parents, Grand parents, Aunts, Uncles: Please pay special attention not only to the what your kids watch on TV and in movie theaters and the music they listen to, but we must also be alert regarding the books they read.

Two particular books, “Conversations with God” and "Conversations with God for Teens"written by Neil D. Walsh , sound harmless enough by their titles alone. These books have been on the New York Times best sellers list for a number of weeks, and these publications make truth of the statement, “Don’t judge a book by its cover/title.”

I have unfortunately read this book. The only thing I got from it was that the author had to be seriously wacked. I thought he needed immediate mental professional help. I also thought his “conversations” were really with the Devil. While at the time I bought it I wasn’t as well versed in my own faith, I DID recognize that this book and its false teaching were supported by no realistic Christian or denomination. I knew that NOTHING in this book was what the Catholic Church taught. He writes that there is no Hell, no sin, just love everyone, supports homosexuality, etc. It just fed into the “Me, Me, Me” ideology that’s society is all about.
 
My dad gave my siblings and I each a copy of “Volume One” last year for Christmas. Knowing my dad, I knew it couldn’t be anything good. Skimming a page or two in the middle convinced me that it was trash.

Take it out of circulation by burning it.
 
Thanks for the warning on these books. I hadn’t heard of them, but I will definitely warn others and keep my eye out for them to avoid them!
 
I haven’t heard of these books. What exactly is wrong with them?
 
Just don’t read anything that is not written by a Catholic author.

are you serious? You’ll miss out on a lot of good reading if you take that approach. CS Lewis, for just one example.
It may be easier to just read Catholic authors, but we’re not meant to just do what is easiest.

No I was not totally serious, thus the 😃 face.

I love C. S. Lewis.

However, I do firmly believe that people should be very careful about what they read (concerning faith) if the author is not Catholic.

If one is reading to learn, then a book like the one in question could lead them in the wrong direction.

Hope that clarifies.

I try to look for the Nihil Obstolate and the Imprimateur (sp?)
 
I have also heard these books are just awful.

But please keep in mind there is a series of books with a very similar title-- “In Conversation with God,” by Fr. Francis Fernandez, a priest of Opus Dei, which are totally orthodox, very inspiring, and just plain helpful. These books are organized around the liturgical year and provide a brief daily meditation based on the day’s Mass readings.

I’ve met a few people who confused the two books, so I just wanted to clarify… 🙂

I’m so glad you posted this, I was worried because I have a friend who is always talking about “The Conversations” and she is affiliated with Opus Dei and swears by them.:yup:
 
There was a tread about these books a few years ago here at Catholic Answers. I will seek the thread, it had some good informational links. The worst part is the man was a former nonpracticing Catholic. His mom was loosely Catholic. It is very “New Agey” and he claims to have had an experience with God and speaks with authority on the subject to unsuspecting children. They were selling them through Scholastic Book club at schools. The sad thing is that ppl who know nothing about Christianity will read this and think it is “Gospel Truth.”

Glad you chimed in, RED MEG. I was going to post the same thing. That is why I clicked on this post to begin with… thought someone was bashing the “In Conversation with God” books.
