Beyonce's Ave Maria

I had never even heard this song until my friend, who adores Beyonce, played it. She knows I am Catholic and thought I would like it. She loves to sing it, but has no idea of the meaning of Ave Maria. She even decided to sing it for our school’s talent show. I can see some holiness in the song if you take the lyrics as meaning that Mary can comfort us in our times of trouble, such as when we are having problems with someone we love. We canm remember her patience and understanding. However, what bothered me was that my friend sang the song without showing any consideration for the sacredness of Mary’s representation in the song. When she sang the Ave Maria part she decided that Mary’s name wasn’t as important as her sounding cool and vocalized it as “Ave Mari uh huh huh” Which is not her name!!!:ehh: So sad.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope!

Well, if we would humble ourselves just for a bit and let the lady express herself spiritually through her music, it wouldn’t be so bad. I personally like it… Ave Maria is usually a wedding song, and this song by Beyonce can be very meaningful to couples. Maybe it doesn’t suit you personally but to others it might. I interpret it as a love song with spirituality involved… I can go as far as to say that I can dedicate this song to God. He is my heaven on earth… he is my hunger, my thirst… I think it’s a beautiful song.🙂

I think the problem here ultimately rests with Beyonce’s appropriation of “artistic license.” She has used that to take a a song that is religious to transform it into a song that really is more “spiritual” than religious----and what’s more, equates spiritual ecstasy and devotion with sexual and romantic union. Some may like that, some may not-----personally she has a right to do that-----but that does not mean I have to like it. It is simply not for me.

Another issue------most of Beyonce’s audience TENDS to be more “spiritual/secular” than devoutly religious------this also comes to down to money. To people whose ultimate point is the making of profit, they would understand that making a religious song more “palatable” to secular/vaguely religious tastes would involve diluting the message and taking it out of the necessarily religious context it was on and give it a “broader, more spiritual than religious” appeal.

Ultimately, it comes down to individual appropriation of material and maximising of profit by appealing to broadly dilutes “spiritual” tastes.👍

I actually heard this song played at a funeral for a homosexual friend of mine who died of AIDS. I bawled my eyes out, and it’s not because it was a funeral-- it made me so sad that the only thing remotely religious they decided to play was Beyonce. I was actually a little bit offended, but then, I think I was offended that entire day…

That’s sad, but truthfully, about the only thing the song would be appropriate for.😦

Turning Something Sacred into Something Sexual . . .
When you put it ‘that way’ it’s almost blasphemy!

Just wanted to let you guys knows that some kind of way I ended up listening to Beyonce’s song on youtube. Then I typed in Ave Maria and Catholic to check out what she was singing about. I ended up here for the first time in probably almost a year. First site that popped up in the search engine.
