My husband and I were privileged to be at the Open House held at the Carmelite monastery here in Mobile a few weeks back, and had a lovely time chatting with these delightful sisters. They were all amazingly sharp, and we were surprised and amused that they ALL knew my husband (he is a longtime local news anchor here.)

We were astonished by the numbers of people - in the thousands, I would guess - who lined up all day for the chance to get a glimpse “behind the walls”. Cars were parked everywhere, and I believe we saw every Catholic - and plenty of non-Catholics - that we know there!

The sisters now live in the Convent of Mercy, situated in the beautiful Spring Hill area of Mobile. The new Carmelites from Vietnam will arrive this Sunday, and there is an Open House scheduled at the monastery for next week to allow people to meet and greet them. (I think I have heard that they will not be quite as cloistered as the older sisters were.) I imagine this is in response to the very positive response to the recent glimpse inside.

It was indeed a rare treat to meet the Carmelites; there will be quite a turnout at the airport this weekend to greet the new sisters, I imagine.
